How can you set challenging yet achievable team goals?

It starts from clear and SMART organizational objectives that can be easily cascaded to individual goals. In order to have the goals related to the company's strategy, the main objectives of the company have to be interpretable and clear to the team, otherwise it will be very challenging to set relatable goals.

To set challenging yet achievable team objectives, making them precise, quantifiable, and congruent with the team's capacities is important. Also, regularly assess your progress and adjust your goals to maintain your motivation and achievements.

Disregarding the organization's overall vision and mission when setting team goals is a common mistake. By neglecting this crucial step, team goals may lack strategic significance and fail to meet stakeholder expectations. Tools like SWOT analysis, SMART criteria, or the OKR framework can be overlooked, leading to unclear goals that do not consider the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the situation, lack specificity, measurability, achievability, relevance, and time-bound criteria, and neglect the need for defined objectives and key results to measure progress and impact.

We should first measure our strengths and deconstruct our goal into milestones. At some point we should push our team members to strive beyond their comfort zones. Always remember that the process achieving a goal should either inspire growth and simultaneously develop people. however not in a way that could demotivate and stress the team.

I believe that the best goals are co-created rather than imposed. I actively engage my team in goal-setting, encouraging them to brainstorm ideas, share their expertise, and express any concerns. This collaborative approach instills a sense of ownership and responsibility in team members, making them feel valued and heard. Individuals are more likely to be motivated to achieve goals when they contribute to their creation.

Always be transparent with your team. Trust and transparency is the key of team success. This builds the synchronization and it also increases the chances of achievement much higher.

Collaborating with your team members to define, plan, and carry out your goals is the second step in creating a team. In addition to fostering their ownership, dedication, and accountability, this will assist you in accessing their insights, abilities, and motivations. You can use techniques like brainstorming, voting, feedback, or delegation to help you develop ideas, rank possibilities, get input, and assign duties so that your team members are part of the goal-setting process.

From my experience the best way to enroll your team and get their strength if they have any weaknesses you can share your experience and knowledge.

Setting goals that are too easy can be demotivating, while setting goals that are too difficult can lead to frustration and burnout. I try to strike a delicate balance by setting goals that are challenging enough to encourage growth and development while also being realistic and achievable within the timeframe provided. This approach ensures that team members are constantly engaged and stretched, pushing themselves to their limits while remaining optimistic and confident.

I think successful businesses don’t worry about “too hard”. When you start sensing a “too hard” goal, the solution is giving the team more TIME, not making it easier. Mediocre goals create mediocre teams, which create mediocre products, which builds a mediocre business.

In setting goals, a manager should consider two important aspects: 1) capability of the person which should be connected to his/her previous achievements. 2) conditions affecting his/her achievement to the target. Such conditions are subject to change due to internal or external factors. Meaning that it doesn't have to be always a higher target in magnitude in comparison to the individual records because factors like market instability or company's strategic direction change may limit by default the capability to achieve a higher target. Agility to dynamic changes have to be present, especially this period of time as we face disruptive changes in many aspects in the business.

Setting goals that are beyond the skills and capabilities of the team could demotivate the team. In my experience, one way to achieve great goal with a team is to break the bigger goal into smaller realistic goals and celebrate the achievement of each of the smaller goals. This motivates the team to do more as they look forward to achieving the next goal. When the goals are realistic and achievable, the team is more likely to complete them and get motivated to do more.

The basic principles of Yoga can be applied here. In Yoga, they always ask you to stretch to your perceived limit and then expect you to stretch 10% beyond that limit. Pushing yourself beyond limit regularly will help you in achieving unimaginable Goals too. Just some extra with consistency and you will become extraordinary. This approach can overcome the barriers in setting More challenging Goals.

Goal achievement isn't a straight line. I set clear milestones and checkpoints along the way, allowing us to monitor progress, identify roadblocks, and adjust our strategies as needed. Transparent communication and frequent feedback keep everyone informed and engaged, fostering a sense of accountability and shared responsibility. It is critical to commemorate all milestones, big or small. Recognizing individual and team accomplishments reinforces positive behaviors, strengthens team spirit, and fuels further motivation for the journey ahead.

It's one of the key ways to prevent burnout. Tracking progress, reviewing and celebrating milestones can help people see their own contributions and the value of their efforts. Sometimes it's not easy for every team member to do this on their own. But it's a manager's job to monitor progress and organize a celebration session with the team.

It takes a real efforts to manage goal. Goal defines the objective of company/project. It's important to celebrate what I have achieved to further push myself.

What I’ve found useful is aligning on a broader strategy with regards to processes we want to work on, or introduce, then breaking that down into smaller actionable goals and delegate those actions to different teammates based on interests and strengths. The plan per quarter needs to be realistic and achievable. As a manager, my aim is to review progress against goals regularly with the wider team, and be flexible together in rearranging timelines. Priorities change as the year progresses so we must always adapt as we go! During monthly 1-on-1’s check in with individuals to see where they might need support or what bottlenecks they’re facing. It’s all about open communication, constant review, collaboration and delegation!

I reckon that this step is key to building a strong team. All across the globe we are well versed with the fact that, getting appreciation is one way of showing an individual that his efforts are nigh being neglected. For instance, when I joined my current organization, I was awarded owing to my performance. This prize motivated me to work even harder. Nevertheless, appreciation and teamwork are the key ingredients ti an unbeatable team.

Active listening is key, especially when a team member is struggling to complete their work or with a co-worker. Having empathy and understanding where they are coming from will go miles in at least finding a middle ground to any conflicts.

In my experience having an open, clear and honest environment from all levels has a great positive impact upon all the team and others they work with. As managers being approachable and understanding and being clear and open about changes in processes or structure, team members being clear about barriers or hurdles and other factors that may impact on work productivity. Only with this can positive resolutions and actions be made strengthening the foundations of the team providing a positive and productive output for all.

Create a culture of openness and feedback. Use effective appropriate communication tools and channels to foster collaboration and communication. Promoting diversity and inclusion, creating a safe supportive environment for everyone can enhance the team’s performance, creativity, foster learning and growth to build trust and empathy amongst each other. Team members can recognize and appreciate the contributions and achievements of each other. This can help motivate, inspire the team, reinforcing the team’s values, culture, and creating a positive fun atmosphere.

One can never have too much collaboration. It is through collaboration within the team, or with other stakeholders that goals can be achieved quicker. Another benefit of collaboration and communication is it helps the team when encountering challenges to not hesitate, but forge ahead while seeking assistance. To achieve this, the culture of feedback and openness must be entrenched first, and it is only through Senior Management that such can be achieved (setting the tone).

I believe communication must and should be initiated,implemented and practiced and acted from the top down and which could lead to great things being achieved for any company.

This will assist you in assessing and appreciating the performance of your team, recognizing and resolving your personal and professional shortcomings, and developing your team's abilities and competences. These techniques also help you gather and analyze team input, support and grow your team members, and analyze and discuss your team outcomes.

When teams work together to achieve collective goals, employees need to communicate regularly. This increases levels of productivity and engagement leading to better business outcomes. Different perspectives of each team member work together to develop a much larger pool of ideas. Achieving team goals brings each team member closer to one another. It fosters a sense of camaraderie, enhances social bonds and motivates everyone to deliver their best work. Every member of a team brings a unique set of skills to the table when working towards team goals.

When team members take ownership of their work and hold themselves and others accountable, they can ensure that the team is working towards its goals and objectives. To emphasize accountability and responsibility, set clear expectations and hold team members accountable for meeting them. Encourage team members to take ownership of their work and provide opportunities for them to lead and take on new responsibilities. Additionally, make sure to regularly check in on progress and provide feedback to help team members stay on track.

We must certainly not forget to celebrate a success but also take stock of the pitfalls encountered, errors, waste of time or money, etc., not to criticize but to learn from them.

Creating a culture of taking ownership is the best strategy which require patience, humanity, open communication and the most important aspect "Trust". When you trust your team 100%, they will take 100% ownership.

One other thing to consider through setting challenging and yet achievable goals is to remember to keep track of lessons learnt through each milestones and incorporate those lessons learnt throughout. I have seen and been in Project Teams where the lessons learnt are only spoken about after the Project has ended. I honestly believe this defeats the notion of continuous improvements. We should always be wearing the continuous improvements hats in every step we take and improve. Lessons learnt are the key inputs to drawout improvements and should not be left last.
