Co-teaching is not just 2 teachers in a room who roughly know the topic of the lesson and improvise. The real value in co-teaching is that it enables teachers to implement principles of internal differentiation beyond handing out different work sheets. This is something that teachers often struggle to find time for. With co-teaching, one teacher can give a group some extra support in additional prep time to better understand materials, while the other can lead a more advanced discussion that goes beyond the baseline tasks. Or the class can be split into groups with different focus tasks to prep for later discussion - each with a teacher to support them exclusively. It is important that the assigned tasks of each teacher support the whole.

Regular communication between co-teachers is critical. It ensures that lessons are facilitated more comprehensively as it lays a platform for progress monitoring and mutual respect in collaboration.

There is no way that co-teaching will work without a good rapport and trust between the two teachers. Students will be able to detect tension and that could cause issues and added stress on your ELL which can lead to learning delays even more then what they already might have. Constant communication is key!

Aprender un idioma en un espacio donde imperen la motivación y la confianza es clave. Para ello, creo que debemos revalorizar la palabra motivadora, el aliento cotidiano, ya sea con el estudiante como con el co-educador.

Las evaluaciones es clave en la enseñanza. Son una gran herramienta, ya sean la evaluación tradicional, con exámenes y notas numéricas, o la devolución escrita con descripción de fortalezas y puntos a fortalecer. Ambas permiten la visualización de avances y obstáculos, y permiten la proyección de un plan de trabajo futuro.

Celebrar el éxito aporta al éxito futuro, ya que el reconocimiento del trabajo ajeno y propio hoy incrementa la confianza y la motivación de las experiencias por venir.

This is going to be stressful for EVERYBODY but something to remember is that you can only take it one day at a time and not to be too pushy. If you need a break, step aside and take some breathes or have a nice cry at the end of the day but realize that you are making an impact, however little it might seem that will have a BIG impact on your ELLs overall life.
