Supporting local recycling initiatives and projects while visiting a destination is not just a responsibility but also an opportunity for travelers to contribute positively to the environment and local communities. As a hospitality management consultant, I've seen the importance of integrating such initiatives into the guest experience to promote sustainability and create a positive impact. One effective way to support local recycling initiatives is to educate and encourage guests to participate actively. Hotels and resorts can implement clear recycling guidelines in guest rooms, common areas, and dining facilities, along with providing separate bins for recyclables.

Do your research: Before you go, find out about the recycling practices at your destination. Look for hotels and accommodations that prioritize sustainability and have recycling programs in place for guests. Pack light: By packing light, you'll generate less waste in the first place. Opt for reusable items like water bottles and shopping bags to minimize single-use plastics.

So many of us don't actually even know the recycling protocols where we live, let alone where we visit. And sometimes there aren't recycling options where you are visiting. So what do you do? Do your research first and foremost, for sure. Also, if you want to go one step further especially in places where recycling is an issue, find the teams who are directly working on combating the problem and either a) work with them and provide support, time, donation and/or b) deliver your recycling to them so it goes into the best hands. We did this in the Solomon Islands and ended up forming friendships for live with the "Positive Change for Marine Life" nonprofit team who focuses on this major issue in the region.

This is actually one of the biggest things we've learned on our two-year expedition around the world: reduce our own footprint in whatever way possible. We give everything we've got - from clothes to containers to cutlery - multi lives to make sure that we are doing our part, even in the smallest way. These things start to add up and actually can make a difference. We also have gone so far to stop using straws all together if they aren't of the compostable variety and bringing our own packaging to pick up food and drinks from locations where supermarket shopping isn't an option.

It's easier said than done to change habits in order to avoid generating waste. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, start small with one action item of remembering to bring reusable water bottles. An easy one to do next would be to bring a backpack while exploring a new destination, so that you don't need disposable bags while purchasing items. You can then use that bag to also transport your own straws or cutlery. These seem like very small acts, but in reality these items can add up to saving a large amount of waste and resources.

Collaboration with local recycling facilities and organizations is another key aspect. Establishing partnerships with recycling centers or community initiatives allows hotels to properly dispose of recyclables and contribute to local recycling efforts. This partnership can also involve organizing educational tours or workshops for guests to learn about recycling processes and their impact on the environment. Incorporating recycled materials into hotel operations is another way to support local recycling initiatives. Using recycled paper products, furniture made from recycled materials, or upcycling decor items not only reduces waste but also showcases a commitment to sustainability to guests.

As avid supporters of platforms promoting second life sales, like marketplaces and community groups, our nomadic lifestyle means each possession is purposeful, reused until it's time for a new owner. We've honed strategies to maintain items in sellable or donate-able condition, focusing on targeted donations to avoid waste and ensuring they reach communities in genuine need.

The shift towards purposeful travel, amplified by the work-from-home movement, offers us more time in destinations to make meaningful contributions. This shift away from ticking off Instagram-worthy sights to supporting communities and ecosystems highlights the universal challenge of recycling. Travelers can now extend their impact beyond mindful product usage to actively engaging with local issues through their time, knowledge, and expertise, addressing critical environmental challenges that affect us globally.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the local community/environment and often enhances a travel experience. Here’s how to choose a project: -Look for projects with transparent goals and outcomes -Ensure the project involves and benefits the local community -Choose a project that matches your skills and passions -Opt for projects that prioritize eco-friendly practices -Avoid projects that exploit vulnerable communities or wildlife -The organization should be open about their funding, operations, and impact Examples: Community Education, Environmental Conservation, Sustainable Agriculture, Public Health Initiatives, Youth Empowerment Volunteering is an incredible way to give back, but choose wisely and make your impact count.

Here of a few ways you can search for a sustainable accommodation: -Locally-owned -Restaurant on site uses locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients -Eco initiatives such as water bottle filling station, shared toiletries (no single use), housekeeping only when needed -Bikes available to use/rent -Efficient water, electricity use -Promote cultural connection/local activities -Use local artists -Have recycling initiatives -Have sustainability values listed on their website While it's hard to find accommodations that meet all of this criteria, you will know pretty quickly if the accommodation values sustainability by the way they present themselves. If it's hard to find the information above, most likely they are not sustainable.

Furthermore, promoting responsible consumption and waste reduction practices among guests is essential. Encouraging reusable items such as water bottles, shopping bags, and toiletry containers can significantly reduce single-use plastic waste. Providing incentives or rewards for eco-friendly behavior can further motivate guests tin recycling initiatives. Personal experiences have shown me that guests appreciate and value hotels that prioritize sustainability and actively engage in recycling initiatives. By aligning with local recycling efforts, hotels not only reduce their environmental footprint but also contribute to the communities they operate in, fostering a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship among guests.
