How can you troubleshoot low disk space on a computer remotely?

My favorite third party tool is Directory Report. WinDirStat is too slow. Directory Report also finds duplicate files and can save more reports than WinDirStat

I use TeamViewer to connect remotely and check disk space and performance, Upgrade those HDD's to an SSD, this will speed up boot and enhance performance

My favorite third party tool is treesize that actually gives you a full analysis for each folder size and location and also shows you the size of a shadow copy (system volume information). Dont forget to run it as an administrator.

For windows, i use a tool called spacesniffer it's a tool that represent disk usage in a very clean way to help you identify the disk usage, for linux i mostly use df, and du i think they serve the purpose.

If authorized/allowed, instruct clients to move data off to external storage. Or, a network storage will allow clients to gain access to files without filling up diskspace. After all, CCleaner will cleanup and free some space.

Uninstalling old,unused or unwanted programs/software can lower disk space but there are residual files/folders/temp files etc.., using revo Uninstaller will hugely assist in removing every bit of the software, did I mention you can use that in the free edition too!

You should also consider deleting any programs that are no longer in use. Windows has its own tools that are useful for cleaning, such as Windows Cleanup. This should be run with administrator (root) user rights so that you can choose to delete old Windows installation files, which often consume a significant amount of space on the computer. Additionally, you can save some of your files in the cloud or on external hard drives or memory sticks to free up space on your computer.

First thing I would do Is Run Disk Clean Up and see if there are any un-needed windows update files that can be removed or deleted. Second I would uninstall any Software/Application that has not been used in last 30 days or more. Third I would run application Like windirstat or Tree Size and See what's taking up the Disk Space and try to move or delete those Files. I would also see If I can clean up the Outlook Mailbox and see if the OST Files can be moved to network drive or Cloud I would also unsync any files that do not need to be synced with Local Resource from the Cloud Storage like One Drive, box, Dropbox etc.

This is only necessary if the computer has a HDD instead of a SSD. Defragmenting a SSD isn't necessary and will just shorten the life of it.

If performing a Defrag make sure it is on hard drives only not SSD's or M.2's. This can degrade the drive. M.2's and SSD's store the data optimally. Performing Defrag on these drives is unadvised to perform on a regular basis.

Defrag is no longer required in a modern PC, and with Solid State Drives, this actually harms the disk and shortens it's life I would focus on freeing up disk space, refer my other post around this

Since there are lot of technical solution presented, Offloading OneDrive files is one of the fastest way of getting some space opened up and this can be done by user through simple instructions.

If available look into expanding the storage. SSD's abs M 2's are reasonably priced. Unless there is no space to add additional physical storage, additional storage is always a good idea.

We've just had a run of low disk space cases on Win10 Production area PCs. Firstly run the built-in Disk cleanup utility - include System Files,if your comfortable and select the file types to Delete. If not already done review the files in the Recycle Bin then Empty Recycle Bin. Secondly I use a utility called Treesize.When installed , run it and Scan the local disk.Great Interface it will display the disk folder structure and file sizes.You can drill down and see what files are taking up the space and Delete as necessary. There's a couple of things you can do if your still struggling but we're getting past basic - Configure System Restore to use less disk space. Delete the Hibernation file Hiberfil.sys

At times, a slow read and write speed on your hard drive could indicate a problem of low disk space. You can compress large files to free up space or move extremely large files to cloud storage.
