How can you use active learning to engage students in Teaching portfolios and evidence for Teaching?

Active learning is such a cutting edge, though not new, way to approach instruction and learning. When I was an adult educator—active learning was the most effective tool we had to engage the adult in their own learning process. It helps ppl to not just understand what they learn, but it assist in how we learn. Of course adult learners bring a lot of lived experience to the classroom and the learning process. Allowing adults to be active participants in their own education fostered a deeper connection to what, and again how, they learned. Great topic!

To be clear and oeecise, i will make the use of verbal (spoken words) and non-verbal (facial and body gestures action in explaining content and context involved. I will also employ the use visual aids to certain extent where possible if there is a provision for. However, as an Educationist and Linguist, i also try to induce in the students the skills involved in good communication; thus as Listening, Spoken language to develop vocabulary and good grammar, and Comprehension.

One thing I have found helpful that right moods to be set among the students by demonstrating the purpose and goals of learning. Learning objectives, outcomes and artifacts to be specifically developed for any course and the students to be oriented so that they are clearly understood. Cultural background and philosophy of the learners must be understood to develop a holistic approach.

The conventional black board teaching has undergone a dramatic unimaginable change. Teacher speaking , students listening, writing lengthy matters on the black board is no more a teaching methodology. The teacher has to impart knowledge in invisible manner by involving the students in the process of learning. Teacher has to remain as a supporter, mentor and facilitator for the students. Teacher is a catalyst to activate the brains of students. Interact, involve, innovate are the key qualities of the present day teachers. Allow the minds to churn vigorously to precipitate the knowledge.

Active learning can be employed to engage students in defining their own purpose and goals for their portfolios and evidence by asking them to write a personal statement or teaching philosophy that summarizes their beliefs, approaches, and goals as educators

In my experience, I have found that the innovative teaching methods are very helpful to make the students more active and inclusive. Role plays and tailored assignments to be developed to create interest among the students. Continuous assessment helps to understand the competency so that a very small peer groups can be formed and the learning can be further facilitated.

Teaching, in India specifically, is not merely a profession. It is filled with a sense of duty, and regarded with great respect. Any evidence and accolades need to be put after consideration of all parties involved.

When students start their journey of mentoring , they should first engage with their students and their aspirations . They should believe in open communication at start , ask them about what they want to do in their life then should move slowly with their courses following a rigorous road map. Their assessment could then be done by the advisory board, peers, supervisors and parents above all

John Hattie reminds us in a big way that feedback is valuable. (The most valuable aspect of effective learning) But, Where we often go wrong is when we don't make sure that our students understand why and how to receive feedback effectively as the foundation to being able to provide them effective feedback. And this is best done by modeling growth mindset, accepting feedback and real world learning.

Active learning such as micro-teaching, peer observation feedback and case studies are very helpful in making students more attentive.

Portfolios are used to document student learning and progression. It is good practice to include artifacts such as essays, reports, and other written work. Submitting creative artifacts that demonstrate active learning is also recommended. Provide options for students to submit their artifacts. Encourage engagement through mediums like videos, photos, and audio reports. For example, a culinary student can submit a video of dishes with commentary, mimicking that of a Culinary TV show.

Reflecting and presenting your portfolio can be an actual tester of how you have achieved your teaching evidence This can reveal the strengths and weaknesses as an Educator to other students. .. A 36o feedback and Evaluation by the students can be one of the ways for constructive view and suggestions

I have conducted several batches of online course in Recombinant DNA technology ( 26 batches) and Basics of Genomics and proteomics ( 7 batches) and my Participants are Undergraduate students to post graduate,research scholars and faculty also. I keep on asking questions ( brain storming or questions from national level competitive exams)during live lecture. I also conduct online quizzes and online assignments also. Take final feedback after completion of course. Ask their suggestions (to make course more fruitful) in feedback form. I always receive very good feedback from participants who attend all lectures of the course.** For engaging the students in the class,teacher must have sufficient content and better understanding of topic.

For my student employees we have a notion database for tracking their projects. Any time they finish a project they ideally go in and input what they did, their role, how many people were impacted, saved files, and potential skills it fits with. This is a powerful way for them to leave their job with everything they need to fill out a resume.
