How can you use the Ansoff Matrix to expand your business?

The Market Penetration strategy, for example, involves selling more of your existing products or services to your current market. It's often the first strategy businesses consider because it carries the lowest risk. Tactics might include pricing strategies, advertising, sales promotions, or improving customer service to increase market share. By assessing the risks and rewards associated with each strategy, you can use the Ansoff Matrix to make strategic decisions about growth opportunities.

The Ansoff Matrix application is a beautiful tool for diagnosing a business’s readiness or capacity for different types of growth strategies. I always use it in strategic planning, and clients are often surprised to find that the highest risk strategy is the one most of them run to first: diversification via new products and services into new markets!

I would not disagree with any of this, but even with such a prescriptive template as the Ansoff Matrix, objectivity is the key to the success this analysis. It’s quite important to have an informed and experienced outsider in the process, or an internal marketing leader who is capable of helping an internal team extract truthful information. Sadly, many companies don’t recognize that this is a marketing task, and many marketers, working primarily in the promotions area, don’t recognize it either.

Ansoff Matrix can help you weigh up the risks and potential rewards of different growth strategies, ensuring that your marketing efforts are aligned with your broader business objectives. It can also provide a useful framework for monitoring and measuring your progress over time. But remember, it's just one tool and should be used as part of a wider strategic planning process.

Most (if not all) of the organizations I have worked with have not recognized that penetration strategies have not been fully exploited before going on adventures with new products and new markets. If anything, the Ansoff Matrix is most useful to demonstrate that the lowest cost, lowest risk strategies are there for the taking. They are the easiest, cheapest and most profitable to exploit, and require no additional functionality, people, skills or product adjustments. This is the Holy Grail of marketing in my opinion: “the quickest path to the greatest gain at the lowest cost”. Otherwise referred to as “low hanging fruit”.

The Ansoff Matrix relies heavily on management judgment and assumptions, which can introduce bias and uncertainty. This qualitative approach may lack the precision needed for critical decision-making.

All of this may be true, but the AM provides an excellent start to the process of self reflection and strategy. Yes, there are many other tools in the tool kit to move to, once key stakeholders have a general idea of what their growth strategy should be.

As a starting point for opening the door to developing a business strategy, I cannot fault the Ansoff Matrix for what it provides.

The Ansoff Matrix does not consider the actions of competitors, so it is vulnerable to unknowns. Collaboration with SEOs can help with many of the elements of the matrix, especially where expert research can be conducted.
