How can you use cloud-based services for telecommunications security?

Cloud services 'can' help with this because many of the database services have native encryption enabled. However if building your own server in the cloud this should be a part of your baseline configurations. Storage resources like e.g., S3 Buckets are often overlooked in my experience so double check that. Using native tools like e.g., AWS Security Center is great for scanning all of your resources to find misconfigurations like disabled encryption.

Please make sure that you are aware who is responsible for the master key. Is this provided by the cloud service provider or you can bring your own key? Please do a risk assessment to see if it meets corporate requirement when using master key owned and managed by the cloud service provider. When the situation warrants and the platform allows, you can bring your own private key so that it is not available even to the cloud service provider.

Unless you have a private cloud with your own sip servers where you can provide end to end encryption you can have true telecommunications as important resilient reliable quality with the security. If can't control the comms pathways you have dropped calls , jitter and disconnects. In telecomms history we had more reliable resilient telecommunications in the 90's with land lines then we do with cellular today which is the standard that voip has to compare to this is just wrong.

The different types of firewalls used are going to be based on your resource type e.g., web applications, apis, servers. Could services do a good job at this as part of their offerings. Many time unless necessary you dont have to setup a 'firewall' when using cloud services. You can configure security groups which are acls that control the flow of traffic. The benefits = easy to configure, no operating system and server configuration need = reducing the attack surface!

Using cloud backup may seem to be an easy option but one needs to be extra cautions about the following when using cloud back ups: 1. How is the data being transmitted to and from the cloud? > Make sure that the cloud offers data encryption for all transactions. 2. Where is the data actually going to be stored ? > Understand the geographic location where the cloud provider stores data and ensure there are no implications related to data jurisdiction. 3. What are the data retention policies? > Clearly define and enforce data retention policies to manage the lifecycle of backups. Also beware of how the cloud provider deletes data after expiry.

Cloud services make it much easier and less expensive to use backup services. You can back up data to small storage bucks, blobs, etc. and to a completely different geographic location with the click of a button!

Native IAM services make it easy to control access to resources. The thing to watch here is having a consistent understand as to who has access to what. Routine user access reviews should be conducted.

SIEM tools can be native to cloud services or purchased from third parties and connected via apis. The best route here should be based on cost on available features.
