Studying composition through fine art is much like learning a language. Using elements of design and composition is how you determine what you want your painting to say. Perhaps you use a bright orange circle in the upper left quadrant of a piece. It's going to say, "look here first," "pay attention to me." Automatically the bright color is creating a focal point. You can then arrange these elements to create a composition, mood, story and how you want the viewers eye to move about a piece. I encourage any art enthusiast to actually paint/draw or create to develop a sense of composition. We learn by doing, not really fully understanding by "viewing."

In my view fine art is used to teach the balance of elements used in understanding composition. Then look for a range of dark and light values,and where they have been placed.I note whether or not the colours harmonize well with one another, and if neutrals gave been used as well. I follow directional lines to see how my eyes are guided through the composition. Then I think about its story and whether or not the artist has conveyed its meaning clearly.

But before you can paint correct values, you have to learn to see correct values. If you’re having trouble with mixing the right color, it often has to do with the value being off and not the color. Learning to see value comes before color. In fact, many artists who receive academic training go for years before they’re even allowed to use color.

Pick a work or artist that is widely recognizable. Try to recreate the same piece but add an element of yourself to the work. When finished reflect to how your contributions have changed the original meaning, added, or kept it the same.

I'd like to recommend a book - "Composition of Outdoor Painting" by Edgar Payne. Author expounds on a lot of compositional theory and 15 compositional archetypes. Even though material is landscape focused, the principles are still relevant and worth attention.

Practicing fine art is a discipline and takes patience. The effort you invest in appreciating art as well as your personal skill sets establishes the depth of meaning and characterization of the art we choose. I find that my own limiting beliefs about what is possible, what I’m capable of and how art should be, often cause the most resistance in achieving a rich experience in my creative potential and mastery.
