In it we can suggest alternatives that can achievr circular economy by reusing the wastes of this project as a raw materials in other projects or curing wastes of other projects to use it in this project. we can make a closed manufacturing process

Some alternative solutions by idea might seem circular but once calculations are done (by means of LCA) their impact might result not lower as expected. Everything in sustainability needs to be quantified to be managed; this goes from an initial assessment to that of a solution.

It definitely supports circularity in the sence that it gives a broader perspective on the reuse, recycle, reduce potential, in the long term gives a perspective on refusal of a product prior to hitting the market or expending resources.

Most LCA are using LCI (Life Cycle Inventories) for their data, which are essentially average data and not necessarily applicable to the specific use case. Some data points can vary a lot from one geography to another. Energy mix, waste management systems, etc, change a lot from one country to another, and these LCAs might be biased when using industry averages. Also, some data points are missing, or assume we live in a perfect world. A classic example is that for a recyclable product or packaging, it will be considered that it will necessarily be recycled, but that is not the case. These LCAs can be misguiding, as recyclability not only depends on material and product design but also on infrastructure and consumer behavior (mainly!).

In my opinion, the integration of blockchain technology into Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) could prove advantageous in addressing the challenges mentioned and signifies a fundamental shift in how we comprehend and value products. By leveraging the transparent and immutable nature of blockchain, we are now equipped to trace the intricate environmental footprint of products from their inception to disposal. This not only empowers consumers with unprecedented visibility into a product's sustainability but also highlights its inherent value, undoubtedly speaking well of brands and transparently showcasing their environmental footprint.

A challenge may also.be acceptability and readiness to adapt to this change. Businesses have to take LCA for circularity as part of their objective in adapting to the changing world. As such more visibility will need to be given to ensure we are on the same page.

LCA is a tool that measures environmental markers (emissions, resource depletion,...). It allows comparison of different options on the production, lifespan and end-of-life of products or activities. This comparison is as good as the data used. To illustrate the difficulties of data quality, I present an example: Primary sourcing of precious metals (mining) is well established with developed processes, infrastructure and logistics. In contrast, the secondary sourcing of precious metals (recovery of WEEE), in its infancy, still has to go through a period of development not only technological but also on logistics and infrastructure. A comparison would be inaccurate, unless secondary sourcing data is "treated" and normalised against primary.

Validity of data poses a critical challenge in LCA and other impact analyses. Many models rely on estimations, which can introduce significant errors, impacting the accuracy of the assessments. Ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the input data is essential for improving the credibility and usefulness of these analyses. For instance, insufficient data regarding emerging technologies in LCA assessments can lead to incomplete or misleading conclusions when assessing circularity.

To address data reliability and consistency issues for secondary or renewable resources, using databases and standards like the European Reference Life Cycle Database (ELCD) or the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method is recommended. Defining the system boundary can benefit from techniques like system expansion or consequential modeling, which consider the broader effects of actions on the entire system, including the displacement of virgin resources or the avoided impacts of waste treatment. Additionally, for a more comprehensive assessment, impact assessment methods that encompass indicators for resource depletion, such as the ReCiPe method or the Circular Footprint Formula (CFF), can be employed.

Sharing this info in simple charts or stories makes it clear how these choices help the environment and businesses in Pakistan.

Effective communication of results enables data availability and transparency and learning across the value chain. This encourages continuity and solves the challenges of data availability.

While private and public blockchain are a viable solution for traceability along the supply chain and product lifecycle. It's circularity, must be taken into account, the impact of that very tool (blockchain) and if it has a mitigation/neutralization strategy for it's footprint.

LCA serves as a tool for assessing circularity, yet using other frameworks alongside it is necessary to achieve more comprehensive results. Circular Economy Performance Indicators (CEPIs), Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certification, and The Doughnut Economics framework are among several frameworks that support the circularity of products.
