Given there are better tools for specific EE applications like a DC/DC switching power supply or an RF module design, for many generic and advanced electro-mechanical systems MATLAB/ SIMULINK is the best. A free alternative of Octave can do some of it, and GNU Plot has better visualization features IMO, but there are no alternatives to SIMULINK as far as I know and all of the features are nicely integrated within MATLAB

MATLAB has toolboxes that make designing and optimizing continuous domain filters easy. Then those could be easily converted to the discrete Z domain and implemented in the code or FPGA. Other toolboxes have support for modulation/demodulation, FFT, other transfers, communication protocols, and so on that are helpful. MATLAB with toolboxes is a great tool! The only thing I do not like about MATLAB is the cost that goes up fast with each additional toolbox. Many things could be done using free Octave and libraries.

You can model different power system elements, passive and active, with different level of fidelity in MATLAB / Simulink environment. There are some essential steps like configuring your solver or powergui as well as reference points for each network and then choosing a proper solver to do the computations for you. The best way to use these blocks are start with simper networks and lower fidelity and then grow your network gradually while doing the optimisation and corrections so you get accurate results. In case you can't find a block you need, you can easily program it your own way!! That is possible!

You can perform a complete machine learning workflow in MATLAB which includes exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, modeling, machine learning and reporting all in MATLAB with no need for other software tools except for taking some input data in an Excel or text format. Isn't this amazing?

Put MATLAB in the corner and don't use it until you have actual data. You can't model what you don't know. Only actual data with circuit constraints will allow you to model the system and do potential analysis of how changes will affect the output(s).

An important point to remember is that never overlook at the input data you need to model your system in MATLAB. You have to correctly model and configure your blocks in MATLAB/Simulink environment. MATLAB does not know anything about your input data and tries to process what you feed it in with. Remember not to trap in the garbage-in-garbage-out scenario which just waste a lot of time and efforts.
