How do you become an art curator?

As a team of mural artists who curate our own works, we transitioned from standard jobs to pursue our passion. In my experience building up relationships with artists and other art curators is very important in order to become an art curator. Spending time with artists, understanding their art process, the meaning behind their work is very important. I think also understanding your own values and what message you want to put out in the world is key. Then you can connect with artists who also are expressing themselves and those ideas. Many times when I have curated an art exhibition it is about the current political climate - movements that are happening. For art curation you want to create a discussion with other likeminded people.

You need to be behind what you are putting out in your message as an art curator. I think authenticity in your message is key. If you have no relationship or passion with the idea you are presenting it can be felt. You need to be inspired by the message you are putting out in the world in order for it to have a stronger impact.

What I enjoy most about the creative process is reaching the end and reflecting on all that I've learned. While the final piece is important, the journey of creation is most satisfying. Each step, from inspiration to completion, is filled with discovery and growth, refining my skills and deepening my appreciation for art. I document the "making of" my projects to share this journey with my audience. Seeing the evolution of an artwork provides valuable insights and fosters a deeper connection. The joy lies in continuous learning and growth, which is why I cherish and record every step, hoping to engage others more intimately with the art.

I strongly believe that supporting the artist's vision is the core of effective curation. I think it is important to be open to different avenues to becoming an art curator. Sometimes artists will come to you with a show that they have already thought about and are asking for you to elevate it further with your own ideas on art curation. Or you may have an idea in your head already. I think it is important to be diverse and open to new experiences. This way you can learn more about yourself and where your strengths lie.

From my perspective, the basic requirements for becoming a curator are: First and foremost to love art. To see exhibitions again and again, in art galleries, art museums, galleries, etc. To be in constant dialogue with artists. Doing a lot of research into which exhibitions have already been curated and thinking about which exhibitions should still be curated. Deep curiosity for innovative developments in society. An ultimate interest in dialogue between the various interest groups. Everything else is learning on the job.
