How do you become a mortgage broker?

To become a mortgage broker, typically you need to complete pre-licensing education, pass a national exam, and meet state-specific requirements. These requirements often include background checks and credit checks. After obtaining a license, gaining experience in the industry and building a network can be beneficial. Continuing education is often required to maintain licensure. Additionally, staying updated on industry regulations and trends is crucial for success in this field.

Working for a Bank is the best step you can make. The training they provide and ongoing experience gathered will be in-valuable to you. From there, further private education will see you issued with a qualification that will allow you to register as a mortgage adviser. Join a small firm of other advisers and work underneath them for a year to get further insights into the industry and when you feel you are comfortable enough, start your own journey as a self employed mortgage adviser.

You will need to get licensed through the state you live in with the NMLS and/or Real Estate License. Each state is different on requirements. On the NMLS website you can search state specific guidelines on what you need to obtain said NMLS license. The state's department of real estate can walk you through how to get licensed in that arena. Education via in-person or online training is typical to earn the Edcuation Credits required to take the test. The education is paramount to learning the industry with respect to licensing. Get licensed and go to work for a mortgage lender to learn the ropes. Be prepared to starve for at least 12 months. In most cases you are paid only a commission on deals that close. It will take you several months to build a book of business you can live on. The mortgage business runs in cycles so probably by the time you close any deal the industry will be in a downturn, and you will be looking for a new job.
