How do you become a regional director?

One thing to consider is that as a Regional Director, you become responsible for a large area of activities, policies, geographical area etc. It is therefore likely that eventually you will know a little bit of everything, rather than being able to go in depth on one topic/area. I've been working in a regional role but changed to a country role again, to be able to better understand the context I'm working in. So consider this carefully, as to whether this fits in your career plans. If your ultimate goals is to become an Internatioal Director or CEO of a NGO, this might be a good stepping stone though.

I'll say build diverse skills and expertise in different sectors and then focus on core areas such as project management, communication and presentation, public and external relations. Engage a wide network that can recommend your expertise at all times. Most importantly, focus on a region and understand the issues across that region.

Strong skills in communication, and budgeting are essential to this job, as are time-management and decision-making. Responsible for a company's overall business operations within a particular area or region. Regional Managers must oversee the progress of sales and profits, evaluate the performance of employees, ensuring they are up to the targets and standards of the company's policies and regulations, conducting assessments, and reporting to the higher administration.

In my experience, you also need a high dose of visibility, in addition to will & motivation for such a role. Often regional roles are occupied by someone who happened to have had the luck to be located in a big market country. And they may not be necessarily the best “candidates”, but they definitely had the highest visibility due to the exposure to senior decision-maker executives you get, when you are located in a big market. Very often the “best candidates” are the people who work in smaller markets (hence lack visibility) who: 1. Have better cross-functional knowledge 2. Are better experts in the functional field as they typically need to perform all the sub-functions in their function 3. Have shaped the country’s business strategy

My viewpoint is shaped by my experience in the charity sector . In organisations have global and countey offices regional offices led by Regional Director sit in that intermediary space. This role exists to translate a global identity , mission and periodic strategies to leaders of country programs/ offices. The trust a regional director to aggregate the value coming out of country offices. Country offices expect a regional director to advocate for the support they need to fulfill their mandate.Regional directors act as a " buffer" for country office leadership , allows them to focus national priorities without have to deal with pressures generated by the global organisation. The function informs the role.

I believe it’s important to have hands on experience in the roles that you manage, so you can understand the challenges first hand and add a perspective that goes beyond the data.

While education and qualifications are valuable for a regional director, practical experience often carries more weight. However, having a relevant degree or certification can provide a solid foundation and demonstrate commitment to the field. More crucial are qualities like leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication, which are honed through experience and continuous learning. Ultimately, a combination of education, qualifications, and real-world experience is ideal for excelling in the role of a regional director.

Become the expert at what you do where you are. Do not aim to be the best at everything everywhere. While you work your way to be the expert at what you do where you are, keep keen on looking at the same field where you are an expert, in other countries' operations. Expand your understanding by learning best practices, starting with the industry where your company competes and going farther into other companies who are best at what they do. Deliver expectations and remember to keep your feet on the ground. It is a rewarding journey best shared with others.

In my experience a lot of people often say they want to be a regional director but they lack experience of how to flex your style accordingly to the nuances or the country. Taking Asia as a region, every country is diverse and in order to manage the region one needs to Get to these countries to understand the macro, business, economy and cultural nuances to manage the region accordingly.

The third step is to pursue relevant education and qualifications. This may include a degree, certifications, or specific training programs to develop leadership and technical skills. Research what’s expected for regional directors in your industry and seek opportunities to enhance your knowledge and credibility.

In my experience, Know your value and the value of your team. Build a strong network of people that can motivate and drive you. Never give up. Create clear goals and never lose sight of the end goal. Adapt quick and make quick and solid decisions.

The candidate for this role has proven success as a frontline manager requiring strong leadership. Directorship requires the ability to build and manage effective systems and processes and the ability to build, ramp up, coach, and lead a staff. Since management of business systems and processes relies on great staff, supporting the staff is the strongest of the abilities required. Within this ability, coaching, motivation, accountability, and recruitment are the most valued skill sets. Generally speaking, leadership roles like regional director tend to find the leaders.

Couple of things I found helpful: Understand the requirements to excel in each country, gain the trust of the leaders in each country and build strong teamwork foundations across the region.

I would say excel in every role that you get an opportunity, starting from the beginning of career. Sustaining “passion” for any role gives an opportunity to learn more & develop in the role. Be open minded enough to explore & expand bandwidth of skills & competencies.

Some basics to master - focus on effective communication, strategic planning, team empowerment, and fostering a positive work culture. Regularly assess your goals, provide constructive feedback, and adapt to changing dynamics in your industry. Additionally, prioritize professional development for yourself and your team to stay ahead of industry trends.

Be the best communicator in the Company. Ensure you set achievable goals for your team and check in with them regularly to see how they are "feeling". Don't use this as an opportunity to micromanage, but more to understand what, if anything, is getting in the way of them achieving their goals/targets. In my opinion, a good manager is one who helps remove the obstacles that prevent their team members from meeting their goals, recognizing that sometimes THEY may be one of the obstacles. If you have set achievable goals, and have checked in regularly, they should never be surprised with where they stand. If they aren't performing they should be fully aware, and more importantly if they ARE performing, they should feel noticed and appreciated.

Knowing your territory is primordial. It is important to deeply analyse the region starting from the geographical, demographic aspects to socioeconomic assets to consider in your regional strategic development for short, medium and long term goals. Also, knowing key regional projects that target human and economic development is also important for engineering projects that respond to existing gaps. Within the actual financial crisis and budget cuts, resorting to effective partnerships is inevitable. Of course a regional director needs to be highly communicative, visionary and should have a strong team of managers who would help translate the regional plan into concrete local actions. Regional directors need to be great leaders.

Walk the talk. If u want to be a regional director, consider an overseas stint to experience the rigors of running a business outside your home country. Very often, HQ stakeholders may not appreciate the challenges faced by the regional teams on the ground. Having regional hands-on experience will be a plus in managing regional teams.
