I'm amazed how feature/function heavy the majority of this advice is...there is a far greater requirement before all of this to assess your own organisational readiness to foster & adopt a modern learning platform/approach/culture. If you have many, then less vendor interaction in the beginning is natural. If fewer, set up prep calls to ensure project goals and RFP understanding is met. You want to have as objective of an evaluation as possible to remove bias and ensure consistency throughout. Once you have your listed of vetted vendors from step 1 and 2, you want to dive deep into these systems. I recommend having product demos followed by sandbox testing with pre-written use cases/scenarios to score/evaluate on. First part here, meet with the vetted vendors and speak openly about where you are at and what you expect in the next stage. Share the pre-written scenarios with solutions engineers at the vendors to prep them for the demo. Conduct the demo and then bring a few of these into the sandbox phase (typically top 3). Perform all the testing to get both a demo of them from the vendor plus your own testing experience. Add these to the MoSCoW Prioritization to have a second round of scoring (the RFP scoping being the first).

I cannot stress this enough. I know L&D leaders who are trying to cover up for expensive mistakes and are counting down the years until their LMS contract is up. If you're clear what it's to do and have rigorously tested it can do that then you can limit the risks and increase the chances of success.

I like to suggest to clients to run two types of tests during the trial: an admin experience and learner experience test. For an admin experience, make sure all the functionality you were looking for is "as described". It's easy to gloss over important features during a demo due to time constraints--this is your time to really test-drive the key features you care about. For the learner experience, pull together a few volunteers, or have another team member pretend they are a learner. Assign a few courses, interact with learners, and make sure the learner experience is as desired. Remember, half the battle is winning over your learners, so make sure the experience for them is just as good as yours as an admin.

This is an interesting "article" as you don't choose an LMS for a course or program. You choose an LMS for your L&D | Enablement programs - all of them, ideally. I've selected LMS platforms in a few organizations, and the platform's success boils down to how prepared the internal stakeholder teams are.
