How do you cope with the complexity and uncertainty of QFD and TQM projects?

The key difference between QFD and TQM is generally, QFD is product focused whereas TQM is system focused. QFD is particularly valuable for converting the voice of the customer into design requirements that in turn are converted into manufacturing or production requirements that are then converted into quality and service requirements. There no precise number of conversions, this is up to the user but at each step of the analysis of risk and other factors are identified and weighted to help identify gaps and optimize overall design. TQM on the other hand is used to covert customers requirements at the business level into a management system design capable of supporting overall business operations to ensure consistent quality outcomes.

O fator de sucesso para implementação de TQM e QFD dentro das organizações é estabelecer o escopo, ou seja, as extremidades que estes projetos visam atender. Lembrando que, QFD é uma metodologia focada no processo de desenvolvimento de produto, cujo objetivo e a captação da Voz do Cliente desdobradas em expectativas e necessidades dos produtos e serviços, estas precisam ser convertidas em características de controle de processo e produto para atender as necessidades dos clientes finais. Já o TQM, é um projeto amplo e requer uma imersão profunda para captar as aspirações e entender as necessidades das partes envolvidas, este projeto engloba a participação de todos da organização para compor um sistema de gestão para qualidade total.

Cross functional teams are critical to the success of both QFD and TQM solutions, the difference being the key stakeholders required for each. Given the importance of voice of the customer in the case of QFD, it is imperative that the initial requirements are correct as these requirements drive the process of iteration with key user groups distinct with each translation or conversion of the analysis (rotation of the matrices) through the QFD process. TQM on the other hand must consider the key operational stakeholders throughout the business processes and is a more enterprise level form of analysis and system design vs product focused for QFD, both are cross functional but with descrete stakeholders at different steps in the process.

Em razão das múltiplas atividades e inúmeras ferramentas e metodologias utilizadas nos projetos QFD e TQM, faz-se necessária uma equipe multifuncional com amplo conhecimento e experiência para conduzi-los. Dado o grau de complexidade destes projetos, é sugerível uma rotina de acompanhamento e follow up de forma a medir o progresso. Adote uma postura flexível para ouvir e captar as dificuldades dos colaboradores durante a execução das atividades relacionadas a QFD e TQM. Programe treinamentos e busque entender na prática a eficácia dos conhecimentos recém adquiridos. Promova eventos para celebrar os progressos com as equipes e busque, insistentemente, o comprometimento de todas da organização para o sucesso dos projetos QFD e TQM.

I would disagree with the notion that QFD is not sequential as it generally QFD follows a linear sequence of conversions or translations from voice of the customer to design to manufacturing/production, the quality/testing to service, etc, depending upon the model. TQM on the other hand is a systemice approach that is iterative and continuous much like the PDCA process.

O QFD, por ser uma metodologia de trabalho, estabelece o início, meio e fim das atividades e requer uma sequência lógica para o sucesso da implementação, pois os assuntos abordados aqui são absolutamente técnicos como especificações e requisitos técnicos, de segurança e alguns casos governamentais, logo não podem ser conduzidos de forma liberal. Já o TQM, é uma filosofia que deverá incorporado no sistema de gestão da qualidade, como este projeto envolve toda a organização, muitas atividades podem acontecer de forma simultâneas, mas, cabe ressaltar que te um sistema central que estabelece as diretrizes para estas atividades.

Although it is true that both QFD and TQM involve the use of supporting tools and methods to optimize, QFD it could be argued is a tool more so than TQM which is more of a management philosophy that informs overall design of a quality-centered business manangent system.

I agree with the above assertion, quality is rarely static, the very process of deeply analyzing customer requirements invariably leads to refinements in product design which then cascade through the QFD process. TQM on the other hand considers the wide range of factors that contribute to optimum management systems design including factors related to the business not specially related to customer requirements.

You must determine if the situation makes a major shift or change even possible. If there is little or no dissatisfaction with the current situation, no matter how promising the TQM or QFD activity may seem, you are very unlikely to succeed. It can take a long time--years in many cases--to educate an organization about the need for change. Otherwise, you will be sowing seed on salted ground.

A metodologia QFD e a filosofia TQM são projetos que visam a excelência operacional dos processos, porém, existe um investimento, um preparo e toda uma mobilização organizacional a ser considerada. É importante entender o momento atual da empresa e as aspirações das partes interessadas para que todo este esforço possa ser convertido em melhorias tangíveis para organização.
