Community Developer's aim to make social impacts through developing programs and initiatives in their community to see growth and enrichment. There are two operating systems to making sure you are able to receive the feedback that will help you drive decision making for your community growth strategy. 1. Leveraging tools and data to help pull in community health metrics such as, engagement, sentiment, attendance, delivery...etc. 2. Using the data to help form the right questions and insights through 1x1 conversations with each community member to understand the health of the community at a micro level. You can leverage community abassadors to help drive 1x1 conversations to summarize feedback back to you, but ultimately to ensure you are able to have a holistic view of the community, everyone's input should be part of the conversation, backed by data and initial strategy.

The most valuable assessments of my community development practices come from the communities I'm working in. Not from the people I work with directly, in that I don't expect (or find) them to openly critique me or my work -- to me or others from our organization. But we hear from the larger community. When we're doing a good job, people talk about it; they ask to be involved. We start to see what people call spontaneous adoption: neighbors not involved in the programs begin to adopt solutions. Personally I don't like the term spontaneous adoption, as it sounds as if it wasn't planned for. But in my opinion successful interventions are measured by reproducibility and adoption by neighboring villages.

I've recently started Sprint/stakeholder reviews as they're done in the scrum framework. This may sound really basic, but even just 15 minutes every 2 weeks, where you (1) repeat your vision for the community or communities (2) show what you've worked on, or what the communities have build or changed (3, optionally) show some product or service you run that is being used by the communities (4) ask for feedback on your results & the product you've shown (5) share what you will work on next This combination creates clarity for your community members or ambassadors. It allows them to follow your line of thinking and give feedback on what of this is really important to them. It also gives a lot of energy. Would definitely recommend this!

One example of an initiative growing out of the community research and understanding of their challenges was the Partners in Art Program at Chaos Group which was particularly rewarding. We provided artists access to mentors and industry leaders, financial grants, and licenses, resulting in several published case studies and additionally influencing numerous artists.
