How do you design a social solution that is innovative and sustainable?

In my experience, affordable housing solutions are not addressing transportation to workplace. In addition to cost of housing, solution should address location in a way that is commuting and cost efficient. For example, finding affordable housing in Miami is challenging considering costs near workplace locations.

In my experience, few social entrepreneurs address issues in Africa's natural resource management space. But if you're considering starting a social enterprise in this space, these five tips are very practical and useful. 1. Understanding existing community practices and their challenges. 2. Identifying who benefits and who loses from current management. 3. Considering the broader costs and benefits, not just financial ones. 4. Recognizing power dynamics between different groups. 5. Focusing on the needs and impacts of diverse stakeholders, including marginalized groups.

In my experience, another way to identify a problem is to use the circular approach. Why? It can help the practitioner scope the problem and everyone indirectly impacted by it. It helps the team anticipate side effects ahead of implementation. This additional approach can be used in recycling as well as microfinance projects with multiple levels of stakeholders that impact one another.

Considerar diferentes fuentes de financiación, como subvenciones, donaciones, inversiones y ventas de productos o servicios. Asegurar que el modelo de negocio sea escalable y adaptable a diferentes contextos y mercados.

The final step involves learning and improving your solution. Establish a learning culture by using feedback loops, reflection sessions, and peer learning to gather insights from users, stakeholders, and partners. Apply improvement processes like the PDCA cycle or agile methodology to identify, implement, and refine changes and innovations that enhance your solution's effectiveness and impact.

Make sure your team is not the same as every other team you have built before. Mix it up and be very diverse. So, bring in people who are NOT in the industry or the space. Bring in the neurodivergent who has a gift for seeing things differently. Make sure your team is comprised of an adequate representation of non-white, non-male, non-abled and non-uber young. The most innovative ideas always come from an excellent cross-mix (at least generational, race, age and sex) of ideas.
