How do you engage with diverse stakeholders and communities on environmental justice issues?

Working with collectives requires patience, practice and ensuring that there is not only opportunity for all voices to be heard but given the space to operate at a high level. One thing I've found helpful is providing that space within a project timeline for every stakeholder. Structuring milestones that include flexibility to account for diverse practices is one strategy. During the Houston Inspira campaign to build awareness and advocate for policy change, there were broad deadlines, but each artist and community set specific dates to advance the project.

Instead of walking in with a belief that you know your audience, try the opposite. If you are locked into a belief that you've done your research, you won't be receptive to new ideas, and you may not even be listening. Start with a commitment to listen. How does environmental injustice affect their community?

Understanding your audience goes beyond basic stakeholder analysis. Consider using tools like PESTEL (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, Legal) analysis to understand the external factors affecting your stakeholders. Combine this with empathy mapping to dive deeper into their motivations, frustrations, and goals. This dual approach allows you to tailor your engagement strategies to resonate on both a practical and emotional level. Additionally, engaging with local leaders or influencers within the community can provide insights that you might not uncover through formal analysis alone.

Through my involvement with an environmental justice organization in New York as a member and advocate, I learned the importance of establishing trust to enhance communication and foster mutual understanding among stakeholders and communities. We conducted bi-monthly meetings - one for members and another for elected officials and communities, where each party could express their concerns. By actively listening to individuals sharing their stories and receiving prompt feedback from stakeholders, we were able to de-escalate tensions in discussions. This approach enabled us to identify solutions and recognize the valuable input and efforts from all involved parties.
