How do you evaluate food manufacturing employees?

Evaluating a food manufacturing employees depends on job profile (Food handler / QA / Product Development etc). Common to all - Basic understanding of quality, hygiene, contamination, storage condition etc to name the few. Specifics to QA / PD - Quality analysis / Quality parameters / preparation / basic food safety / tasting and sensory etc to name the few. Best is Train to the task, assess performance, improve and assess. Training and assessment to be aligned to the tasks. One of the better way to evaluate them would be to involve them in a Quality investigation..

Yes.. at their joining or start of financial year define their goals and parameters how they will be measured.. review the performance half yearly and judge the performance basis on the goal completion..

I agree that first step is to have SMART objectives, however they shouldn’t only be aligned with the strategy of the company; should be aligned with their upline’s objectives (the “waterfall effect”, they call it)- and it’s very important that cross functional areas don’t have conflicting objectives. Supporting areas such Quality and Maintenance shouldn’t have productivity as a direct goal while Operation areas shouldn’t have to be affected by re-cleaning or re-testing: they should be encouraged to report and correct food safety and quality issues.

I agree this is is key and should be part of the overall training program, most importantly there should be refresher training and evaluation. The other aspect is that training and evaluation should be different for supervisory personnel that oversees performance vs the training and evaluation for operators. The last part is to keep balance evaluating personnel while performing their duties vs written evaluations.

The policy here should be all inclusive: companies tend to leave Temp employees out and only include full-time employees in the reward program, that has the opposite effect. This program has to be supported by senior management and once starts, should not be abandoned. I have seen many places with the “employee of the month” board abandoned for months and that sends a message to the people. The “jury” should include a cross functional as well as multi level team; must be careful not to reward and employee that others consider low performer but “the boss likes him/her”; that also has a counter productive effect for the reward program.
