Answering these questions can help you determine which multimedia is best for your course.

I include paintings on assignments to illustrate how themes found in literature are often found in works of art. I use films to illustrate how themes move across cultures. I show "Zorba the Greek" in conjunction with "Their Eyes Were Watching God" because Zorba and Tea Cake are similar. "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" and "Le Norte d'Arthur" illustrate similarities between the cowboy and the knight who both used their skills with weapons to make their cultures more just. I play music clips from different periods of time, a clip called "choral music over time" illustrates how The Beach Boys and Crosby Stills and Nash employ choral singing in ways not unlike Thomas Tallis and William Bird and then students write about what they heard.

To ensure multimedia is beneficial to your learners, make sure it aligns with your learning objectives and outcomes. As mentioned above, I try to show a film with each book I teach, but it is not a film version of the book I am teaching. I show, for example, the film version of William Faulkner's book "Intruder in the Dust" when my ninth graders read "To Kill a Mockingbird." There are many similarities (and differences) between each story and it is my hope students will be able to make connections.

I have some exercises I developed that I call "Illustrated Poems." Some examples are Walt Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed," T. S. Eliot's "The Waste Land," and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner." In some I give students a collection of paintings and illustrations and ask them to work in groups to place the pictures next to lines in the poem they might illustrate. At other times I place the pictures in the poem and ask students in their groups to explain how the pictures capture the language of the poem.
