How do you lead others to follow safety practices?

I disagree with it being number one, Leadership in Safety most important step is the commitment to Zero Harm from the Board, CEO, Exco and Senior Management. Without this there is no support to implement systems and employ competent people to execute tasks. It is this foundation that support your Health and Safety Stategy. Safety Leardership starts from the Top down.

One way that I have found to be very effective is a peer based enforcement system. Small rewards (ex:new tools)and making sure to keep the remedial counseling light, but focused, has helped me win with my teams. Always reminding them that all the rules are to keep them safe, not to make their job harder. They also knew that I would stand up for them when they took action to stop work or put something out of service. I never let them suffer for doing the right thing. I have found helping them understand that working to benefit the team as a whole, is mutually beneficial to each individual. It’s not about implementing and enforcing policy, it’s about caring for people and focusing on actually making the workplace better for them.

The senior leaders should know and follow the rules and lead by example. Making sure the leaders show up and set a good example is the first step in ensuring safety is a lived value and not just a poster on the wall.

The key to a sustainable safety and health program is having true commitment from those who have authority in decision-making, with a goal to investing in their people who contribute to business revenues. This commitment include the provision of funds to acquire the necessary equipment, tools, materials, and people do perform their tasks safely. If true commitment exists, the rest should follow including full participation from all stakeholders, consultation, collaboration, accountability, recognition, re-enforcement, daily monitoring of hazards and implementing corrective actions, developing KPIs, and reporting results to all stakeholders to ensure transparency and continuous improvement.

Safety is no accident! If in doubt ask? Don’t be afraid to ask, there are no stupid questions, if you are new, and even if you’re experienced, asking the right safety question could stop that incident from happening. Being certain in a Risk Assessment makes all the difference.

Important not to undermine our natural safety calibration as humans. When oganisations overdo low level personal safety messaging (e.g "hold the handrail on the stairs") we should not be surprised if this leads to worse outcomes. Better to focus on developing & maintaining folks competecies and ensuring the systems & procedures we use are calibrated to relevant good practice (RGP).

In striving for Zero Harm, we need to ensure that proper training programmes are in place that ensure that that we have the right people doing the task. A Safety Communication plan is crucial for every workplace that deals with the onboarding of employees, General induction, Job specific induction, Area specific induction, the training of Job Specific Procedures and Risk Assessments. Safety meetings, toolbox talks and a continuous Risk Assessment like a Daily Safe Task instructions, JSA or similar methodologies. However after the training and communication is done a Zero Tolerance policy must be in place to ensure enforcement. Coaching however is important to test if there is a lack of procedural clarity.

Communication plays an important role in safety. Positive leadership is essential to a positive safety culture and clear objectives are necessary. Communication of these should be clear, concise and justified. Performance should be monitored, corrected and explained as Demmings described, plan, do, check, act

The best ways I have found to engage and motivate the workers at the coal face is to motivate the supervisors, supervisors are the ones to direct the workers and they are also the ones who set the pace.

providing safe and secure environment is crucial to today's world and to enable safety measures are put in place for every staff of the organization to follow, the best way to do this is to create Awareness and build safety culture around the work place to safeguard life and prevent and control loss of assets of a company.

It is necessary, if not a legal requirement, to provide the safety resources required. Though having the right training, personality and mindset is just as important. Poor training and you will get poor results; The wrong personality and personnel will not approach or will go out of their way to avoid the safety people; The wrong mindset and you have just wasted your money on new kit and training.

Simple industry wide guidance is the most useful and easy to implement. There are some great sources of these in oil and gas industry like step change in safety in the UK.

War can not be won without weapons like you can not achieve any goal without resources. The same applies to safety, Safety goals can not be achieved without adequate resources so it is the responsibility of management to provide resources The following resources need to be required 1. Safe machinery 2. Appropriate safety controls - guards, interlocks, sensors, e-stop etc. 3. Appropriate equipment and tools for work 4. Monitoring equipment or kits 5. Skilled and trained manpower 6. Trainer for training internal or external 7. Auditors to ensure healthy ness of system 8. Software for reporting, analysis, communication 9. Resources to comply with legal obligations 10. Support for Promotional activities 11. PPE 12. Safe work environment

Are you doing a good job as a leader in "involving your team in safety decision" when it comes to procedures? Before jumping to answer "YES!" let me ask you some follow up questions. Are they involved in the actual writing process of the safety procedures? Or is that done by the "people in the HQ"? Do they have the opportunity and channels to challenge what is in the safety procedures? Do you simply ask them what is in the safety procedures that doesn't make sense to them? Are you marketing your safety procedures as "the only way to do the job"? Now are you "really" involving your teams in safety decisions when it comes to procedures?

Very important step is team buy-in most procedures in workplaces today was done as a desktop study of the activity without much employee participation. You need to acknowledge that they are the expert in their position that is why you recruited that particular team member and that they need to have a input in procedures form them to completely adopt it. Roles and responsibilities with regards to Health and Safety must be captured in a legal appointment letters or job specification. Employees must be fully empowered by senior management to contribute to the Safety Culture and system implementation through meetings, suggestion boxes and Safety incentives for continues improvement.

Daran sollten alle Beteiligten mitwirken. Mitarbeiter als wissensträger (ggf. Sicherheitsbeauftragte) und Führungskräfte (Vorarbeiter, Meister, Techniker, Ingenieur). Also jemand der zur Umsetzung der Arbeitssicherheit berechtigt ist und die Unternehmerpflichten wahrnimmt (Haftung und Finanzmittel). Nach der umfassenden Analyse können Lösungsansätze mit dem Team erarbeitet werden. Das schafft Verständnis und Akzeptanz bei Verantwortlichen und Mitarbeitern.

Team involvement helps in building a positive work culture. Shop floor people or executors know real hazards in their work so their involvement can help in making the workplace safer. Team involvement surely helps in building ownership and improving acceptance of decisions among the team Always involved your team in safety discussions during daily meetings, and committee meetings, implementing new changes, discussions, and suggestions to improve their moral and commitment towards safety

This is the most crucial. Lead by example. Do it yourself first and show them the right way, the safe way. Your crew will respect you more by doing the hard work yourself in front of them.

Modeling the behavior(s) is absolutely crucial because it shows you are following your own advice. In addition, it shows to them the value you place on it.

Dieser Teil kann fachkundig begleitet werden. Wie zuvor bereits beschrieben, wird die Sicherheitskultur durch die Geschäftsführung und die Führungskräfte geprägt. Diese müssen es jedoch auch erklären (Gefährdungsbeurteilung) und kommunizieren (Unterweisung).Das schließt auch den Umgang mit Verstößen ein. Führen bedeutet vorleben und begleiten. Beachte: Kultur ist das, was wir daraus machen!

In my experience, you have to “walk the walk”. If you are in an environment that requires PPE, you NEED to lead by example. First off, never ask someone to do something that you would not do yourself! In my work environment there is a very slight margin for error. Working with chemistry that can burn, blind or suffocate is no laughing matter. Again, all precautions should be taken before undertaking a task. If it’s too dangerous….stop work immediately and get some input as to how it can be done in a safe manner, if at all.

I believe safety should always be a top down approach starting with the CEO in order to work most effectively. I also believe that training should be engaging in ways to keep your audience involved and interested. Everyone has viewed countless boring dull presentations. I like to add humor, current events, demonstrations, interactions, and real life examples just to name a few, to keep employees engaged.
