This is the beauty of LinkedIn in my opinion. Like trust, which usually occurs through three “steps”: rapport, credibility, and then trust. Usually, to exercise thought leadership you don’t need to be the expert (it helps if you are, as you should always strive and push yourself to be), you don’t necessarily need to be the absolute authority. You can find the authorities naturally using the LinkedIn algorithm and connecting with other people you already engage with/are connected to. Read the comments, see who has the most compelling posts, and then reach out to them as well with transparency and intent, expressing you want to build a network with more people like them (and the original other connection). “Connection bread crumbs.”

This is the element in my opinion that most people tend to forget: “closing loops”. For my role as commercial and product cofounder, I’ve always found this to be best practice. Not only take time to speak with people, but to actively listen, take notes, take action, and follow up to report that action to the person who suggested the idea. Small micro transactions of trust turn into large deposits, that exponentially increase in value. Relationships are key, and trust doesn’t happen overnight, so making this habit builds good will and showcases to someone that wants to trust you, that “hey, maybe I can trust this person!” And once that is established, over time, you’ll find your name coming up often and generating organic referrals.
