1 Know your worth

Before you enter any negotiation, you need to have a clear idea of your value in the market and your expectations for the job. You can use online tools, industry reports, and your network to research the salary range and benefits for similar roles and locations. You can also consider your skills, experience, qualifications, and achievements that make you stand out from other candidates. Having this information will help you set a realistic and reasonable target for your negotiation and avoid settling for less than you deserve.

2 Be flexible and respectful

Negotiating a job offer is not a one-sided affair. You have to consider the employer's perspective, needs, and constraints as well. You should be flexible and willing to compromise on some aspects of the offer, such as the start date, the relocation package, or the bonus structure. You should also be respectful and courteous throughout the process, avoiding ultimatums, threats, or demands that could damage the relationship. Remember that you are not only negotiating for money, but also for trust, respect, and collaboration.

Part of being respectful is knowing what leverage you have to use in your negotiation. "I need more money" isn't a good platform for negotiations, so be sure to consider external factors that are less about you and more about the global environment, and don't be afraid to get creative! When negotiating, consider: - Market competitive salaries for the role - Over and above experience you bring - Non-compensation benefits, like time off, start date, and hybrid flexibility - Start Date - Equity, Bonuses, Sign-on Bonuses Lastly, when trying to negotiate a higher salary, one of my favorite things to do is ask if "there is wiggle room." It is a casual but pointed way to get them to entertain a friendly negotiation!

5 Know when to walk away

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may not be able to reach a satisfactory agreement with the employer. This could be because the offer is too low, the terms are too rigid, or the culture is not a good fit. In such cases, you should know when to walk away from the negotiation and decline the offer politely and professionally. You should thank the employer for their time and interest, explain your reasons for declining, and leave the door open for future opportunities. You should not burn any bridges or regret any decisions, but instead focus on finding a better match for your career and your compensation.

Before the negotiation, establish your threshold. This is the level of remuneration below which you are not prepared to accept. It's equally important to know this, not just your ideal. Consider this carefully, taking into account your research into the industry, company, role and market salary. Add on to the equation your practical factors eg. personal and family needs, reasonable sustainable level, life goals etc. If it is still below your threshold after negotiation and the employer is unable to move any further, take a step back and look at other factors in the opportunity - your interest, growth prospects etc. and decide if it can make up for the discrepancy. If not, make your decision and professionally decline the offer.
