How do you test and improve loyalty program technology usability and performance?

I take issue with the premise here. Loyalty programs are not about attracting and retaining customers. If that's why you launch a loyalty program, best of luck, but that's not the main purpose. The primary goal of a loyalty program is simply to ensure that customers have the incentive (points, miles, discounts) to IDENTIFY themselves with each and every transaction or interaction. In this way you can initiate and build a long-term, meaningful relationship with the customer. You cannot build a relationship with a customer without knowing who that customer is. If your business already comes into natural possession of the customer's ID (like, say an online business) then you probably don't need a loyalty program and shouldn't bother with it.

To continue on with @Don Peppers insight, if you DON'T have access to a unique customer ID across variable channels of interaction (in-store vs online) and you see the need to understand their buying behaviour, then a loyalty program CAN be the value exchange for the ongoing data collection..."we will give you these rewards and benefits IN EXCHANGE for you identifying yourself each time you transact/interact". The main consideration is to ask yourself 'what problem' can a loyalty program solve for your business and for your customers OR what value do you want to add to your customers lives.

My 2 reasons why: 1. shows active involvement: a high redemption rate shows that customers are actively participating in your loyalty program and actually benefitting = redeeming rewards. 2. shows when to intervene: if you notice that customers are sitting on their points, it may be a sign that they are not finding value in the program or rewards are not attractive.

After that insights are gleaned from testing, it's crucial to implement and monitor improvements diligently. Prioritize changes that promise the most significant impact on metrics and customer satisfaction. Continuously evaluate the effects of these enhancements over time, using the same rigorous methods as before.
