How do you use BIM to support clash detection and resolution in complex projects?

Before BIM, finding design problems was like walking in the dark. With BIM, it's like turning on the light. We can easily spot where things might go wrong, like seeing a step before you trip over it.

in some project, clash detection and resolution is used as after submission as part of handing over and not related to on going process as part of quality of the work delivered. on the other hand, in well managed projects with processes. the clash detection is used on weekly/monthly bases between all disciplines/partners to prevent clashes as a part of spatial coordination that reflect at the end as the quality of management and the project delivery.

In my experience as a BIM Manager and having worked for a few years in the conflict detection and resolution activity, I can say that these are essential processes to guarantee the quality and efficiency of any AEC project, and in the BIM process we carry out spatial coordination using specific tools ( such as Clash Detective from Navisworks Manager) of specialized software to detect conflicts between (files) projects of disciplines, whether these conflicts are geometric (solid) or logical, when they refer to conflict in relation to use, finding duplicates, which can creating rules to carry out the analysis, determining tolerance limits and directing those responsible for

For me, one of the biggest complications I have encountered in my years as a BIM Manager when it comes to clash detection has been the usual disconnect between the design software and the coordination software itself. In this way, the federated model is not connected with the actual design, and every time an interference is detected, it is necessary to go back to the design tool and load the corrected model back into the federated model. This workflow makes version control difficult, and adds extra processes that ultimately slow down the entire design and coordination process. However, we are increasingly finding cloud-based solutions that connect both modeling and coordination tools, reducing the possibility of making mistakes.

One of the main challenges that you have to adress before making clash detection is to figure out what is your expected output from the clash. Because this will decide the types of tests (Hard, Clearance , Duplication) , the category that you will check, the tolerance that will be used, the format of the exported reports. Additionally, the criteria for the clash reports will vary depending on the stage you are doing the clash check for schematic, DD, or construction.

One of the problems that comes up time and time again is how the process is presented. Using Navisworks to run clash detection is fine, but a clash tolerance needs to be added and tests refined. Saying that the "X" model has 1000 clashes with the "Y" model is not helpful to anyone. Assigning clashes to the relevant personnel for resolution speeds up these traditionally long workshops. In addition, someone (defined in BEP) needs to go through the tests and do a sanity check, as not every clash is black and white. For instance, a grille clashing with a ceiling is an accepted clash. Pipes of a certain size that rise between floors and clash with slabs could be considered acceptable, as there may be an agreement to core these on site.

in my experience the most challenges are coming from people in the coordination process as follow. -not understanding how much information or details they should provide -deploying action to the team when who is taking decision not communicating with the team -when they not understanding how fast they should take action when updating -how is the clash detection and coordination depends on the quality of BIM Models delivered

Always prepare a clash matrix that covers all your needs\requirements from running the clash detection. Test this matrix before run it. It is always betters to use search sets not selection sets. Make your sets based on element category & file type to be able to use it for any other projects.

in the market we still have some who is using 2D in coordination and when asking and provide the consultation. we found that it not related to the software or BIM as technology but it related to the use of BIM and quality that is provided in models as who implemented as BIM it just represents the 3D of the object without any consideration to information, details, workflow, processes, quality, or way of work so it can't be used in clash detection and resolution.

I think VR and AR are important and cause easy understanding for everyone. This industry extends to other subjects such as noise and vibration, rehabilitation, and health monitoring. I hope the BIM will be universal for all issues and all people know this final step is based on the first step( clash detection)
