Self-awareness is the cornerstone of EI, and involves being conscious of your own feelings, ideas, values, qualities, and restrictions. To make use of self-awareness to make better decisions, you must first recognize the emotions you are experiencing and label them correctly. For example, are you feeling angry, frustrated, or disappointed? Then it's important to understand the causes and consequences of those emotions. For example, what caused your emotion, how did it influence your behavior, and what was the result? It is also essential to consider your values and goals in relation to your decisions. For example, what do you care about most deeply, what are your objectives, and does your decision support that? Lastly, it is important to recognize any biases or blind spots that may distort your judgment. For example, are you overly confident in yourself, confirmation biased, or anchoring on irrelevant data?
