If senior team members are clashing over strategy, I’d bring them together for an open and structured conversation. I’d make sure everyone gets to share their perspective and encourage them to really listen to each other. Then, I’d shift the focus to the company’s bigger goals and use those as a guide to find common ground. Sometimes, sharing relevant data or examples can help keep the conversation grounded and productive. Once we find alignment, I’d help them craft a clear strategy that everyone can support. It’s about building collaboration and reminding them they’re stronger when they work as a team.

I would get the team members to focus on the problems, obstacles, goals and solutions instead of attending exclusively to differences. I would facilitate a systematic discussion on the strategy using a creative process like 6 thinking hats where each member gets an opportunity to express specific aspects of their specific Inputs without anyone reacting and responding, much like brain storming. Once done, I would ask them to lay down criteria for selecting Inputs without any regard to its source. And apply those criteria to create a strategy that is agreeable to everyone

- Pretty simple. Reiterate the CEO's strategy. That is what everybody should rally behind. That is the only strategy that matters.

When senior team members clash over company strategy, it's essential to manage the situation with tact, clear communication, and a focus on achieving consensus. Here’s how you can steer the team toward a unified direction: 1. Facilitate Open Communication Create a Safe Space for Discussion: Encourage all team members to voice their opinions and concerns openly. Make sure that everyone feels heard, and actively listen to the underlying reasons behind their perspectives. Identify Common Ground: Highlight the areas where there’s agreement. This can help shift the focus from conflict to collaboration and allow the team to build on shared values and goals.
-
Clarify the Company’s Vision and Goals Revisit the Mission and Long-Term Vision: Remind the team of the overall company mission and long-term vision. Frame the discussion in terms of how each proposed strategy aligns with those goals. Define Success Metrics: Make sure everyone understands what success looks like and how it will be measured. This helps align decisions with concrete business objectives rather than personal preferences. 3. Encourage Data-Driven Decisions Use Evidence to Support Arguments: Ask team members to bring data and analysis to support their viewpoints. This minimizes subjective disagreements and steers the conversation toward objective decision-making.
