In my career, building worlds in real life that people interact with I find it best to work backwards from the message. What do you want the viewer to feel? Why? How can you create a visual that has that feeling and what are the common signifiers of that? Great now what are the uncommon secondary signifiers.. And also what is POSSIBLE. I think so much of bad design that I see in the event / sets / creative direction world is overly ambitious or overly complicated. Often the pursuit of an idea or concept these days starts with "what do people want us to do" or "how can we piggyback on that?" and thats just bad design, and not creative. we are informed by social media and that informs who we deem valuable as thinkers.
