To maintain performance and prevent headaches from updates and patches, a proactive approach is essential. First, establish a regular schedule to evaluate and deploy updates in a controlled manner, testing them in a staging environment before rolling them out in production. It's also crucial to constantly monitor system performance and define specific metrics to quickly identify any anomalies caused by updates. Additionally, setting up regular backups enables swift system restoration if issues arise, minimizing the impact on performance. Documenting each change also helps to quickly identify and resolve issues as they occur.

Weekly or bi-weekly updates will prevent backlogs. Prevent production system problems by testing updates. Updates that improve system stability and security. You can track performance after updates and rollback if necessary. To optimize performance, regularly clean systems and update hardware.

For servers: Use a pilot group to test the updates that come out after patch Tuesday. Divide your servers into groups of ~ 8-16 servers and patch each group weekly with the corresponding updates from that month's patch Tuesday. I personally prefer Ivanti's patch management solutions. Use any preferred Patch Management software. Use the PM software to only push out the updates after production hours or figure out a schedule to push them out during low volume usage times if you're 24/7. Work with the business to schedule maintenance windows for outages when the servers are patching and need to reboot. Any good software should also allow you schedule reboot times for the servers if they receive critical patches that require reboots.
