What are the benefits and challenges of disclosing scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to stakeholders?

Sharing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions is like opening up about all the ways we impact the environment. It builds trust with our supporters and helps us find ways to do better across the board. But it's not always easy – getting all that data, especially for Scope 3, can be a real challenge. Still, being upfront about it lets us compare ourselves to others in our industry and show we're playing by global rules. Of course, it takes a lot of effort to gather all this info, and sometimes, the reports from others might not match up. But in the big picture, it helps us make smarter choices and stand out as leaders in sustainability.

I know remembering the exact definitions of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 is challenging. So, I did create a short association with each scope. -) Scope1 - "My Emissions" (These are your "own emissions," like from your car or toys that use batteries) -) Scope 2 - "Electricity Emissions" (These are the emissions from the electricity you use, like when you watch TV or play games) -) Scope 3 - "Supply Chain Emissions" (These are all the emissions made because of the things you buy, like your clothes or the food you eat) ** Please note that this simplification is for remembering the concepts only. Real emissions are a little complex to understand as a lot of factors come into the picture.

Frameworks abound, but the foundation rots: oil & gas, vital to most, underreport emissions by 3x, poisoning every number. Even clean data lacks teeth. Offsets are fig leaves, CCU/S tech's Band-Aids, and LCA underestimates a cruel joke. Where are real solutions? Time & money, the fuel for mitigation, dwindle. While we parse decimals, the Scope 3 behemoth grows unchecked. This isn't measuring the ocean; it's fiddling while the tsunami roars. We need a paradigm shift, not data polishes. Confront underreporting, build real tools, or drown in data while the planet cooks.

Extending product use life reduces scope 3 in the same proportion. It also reduces sales of new products in the same proportion. Take the example of a chair. Buy it, use for 5 years and buy a new one. If instead you use it for 10 years, the scope 3 emissions related to use and disposal spread over 10 instead of 5 years. The producers sales quantity fall by 50%. Due to fear of losing sales scope 3 is not disclosed. However, if the intention is to use the product longer, customers are willing to invest more, eg 50% extra in price and pay for a life-extending update and maintenance. I have bought chairs with 25 year guarantee. I assume the producer is also prepared with spare parts and maintenance if needed (they are now 8 years old).

But if you need an accurate footprint, you need to carry out a comprehensive analysis. This can be done by taking activities and emissions factors data into account.
