Biomass also operates at a high temperature so the existing heating system, likely powered by oil or gas, can simply be reused with very little modification. Because it is high temperature it is also suited to "burst heating" where the building is heated for a few hours morning and evening. This method is not well suited to heat pumps which tend to be more efficiently if run over a longer period. Hybrid systems with a heat pump providing the main heating and biomass as top-up, are also possible.

For economic & environmental viability there are often a couple challenges: 1) Biomass fuel feedstock often needs to be within a 50 -100 mile radius to minimize transportation costs/emissions & to leverage infrastructure. 2) Although a regenerative tree harvest/replenishment management program can be pursued, the best economical feedstock material can be downed trees, old wooden shipping pallets, municipal waste, etc.) 3) It doesn't necessarily remove additional carbon GHG unless it is used to abates more carbon intensive processes. 4) Reduced moisture in feedstock is necessary to keep reasonable thermal conversion efficiency.

But, I see that to reduce the many challenges, we need public policies integrated with the private sphere, so that production has the lowest impact possible, that the labor and resources used are local, and that the energy generated and all remaining by-products of this production are the most sustainable. In all generation systems, it is necessary to explore sustainability and its tools to the maximum, ensuring energy justice (both in terms of access to energy from this source) and the preservation of surrounding spaces and local biodiversity.

To address the obstacles related to biomass, it is necessary to expand the supply chains of feedstock, improve the technology used for conversion, and develop more effective techniques for processing.

Overcoming the challenges of using biomass as a renewable energy source involves a combination of technological advances, appropriate policies, sustainable management and public awareness. Plants that accumulate heavy metals need to be treated or disposed of safely after harvest to prevent reintroduction of the contaminants into the environment.
