LCAs can be used to identify areas of improvements and create a better understanding of where the impact is coming from. On a personal note, I like using LCAs for conducting fair comparisons of two different products/assets. It gives market insights between your own product lines, competitors flagship products and much more.

Data availability, quality, and uncertainty can challenge LCA. Conducting LCAs requires significant expertise, resources, and subjective assumptions. Comparability between studies is limited. Gaining stakeholder acceptance and integrating insights into decisions can be difficult. LCA also has limitations in scope, not addressing all sustainability issues. However, LCA remains a robust, science-based tool for quantitatively assessing environmental impacts and driving strategic improvements.

LCA still has limitations as it focuses predominantly on global or regional impacts. Hence the need for more “site specific” data. The LCA methodology also presents other critical issues which include the use of different methodologies for assessing environmental impacts, different software and databases and, in some cases, the analysis of out-of-date data. Finally, the realization of a Life Cycle Assessment study requires adequate skills in the phases of data collection, processing and interpretation.

One major issue is that sometimes we have to make assumptions about certain data points, especially when detailed information is hard to come by. Additionally, a lot of the data used in LCA doesn't stem from real-world measurements but rather from theoretical sources, which can lead to inaccuracies. Another challenge is the many unknowns in the value chain, like not knowing the exact environmental impacts of suppliers or transportation. All these challenges make it tough to get a clear picture of a product's environmental footprint and emphasize the need for careful interpretation of LCA results and continuous improvement in data collection methods.

Me parece interesante el enfoque y la herramienta del ACV, para identificar impactos en el proceso o en el producto, pero no olvidemos que también nos proveerá datos que permitan hacer mejoras, que finalmente deben redundar en un beneficio económico, es decir podemos hacer cambios que ayuden a la sostenibilidad del negocio en el mercado, a la par de conseguir eficiencias ambientales.
