What are the best portable professional audio interfaces for on-the-go recording?

I personally use the SSL 2+. I bought a case for it so it can go right in my backpack with my laptop. Great headphone amp onboard and you can also record thru it. More than once I have tweaked mixes on a plane using this interface. SSL is a great company that offers serious gear for professionals.

In my experience, MOTU has some of the best AD/DA conversion out there at a fraction of the cost of interfaces from UAD or Audient. The MOTU M4 has been my on the go pick for the last year and has fulfilled every need. I use a lot of analog gear (500 series racks, summing mixers etc.) and the ability to have to 2 line I/O, as well as 2 preamps, midi I/O and RCA out, makes for an incredibly versatile piece of gear, all for under $500! Previously I was using a UAD Apollo Twin X, and while the UAD ecosystem is fantastic I don’t believe that the trade off in terms of price/compatibility is worth it. It isn’t bus powered, which…as you can imagine sucks when you are on the go. The M4 however? Fits in a tiny backpack, and only needs a usb c cable!

As a PC guy, I am currently using Steinberg audio interfaces. For a portable setup, I would then recommend the UR22 C (C standing for USB C connection). Software compatibility has never been an issue (Cubase, Pro Tools and Reaper) as well as system stability. Quality of preamps matters as well, especially when recording acoustic instruments, but interfaces such as Steinberg and Focusrite offer decent quality preamps at a reasonable price.

Having a USB-C is a great connectivity option as many computers and laptops are built with those. There are some great interfaces out there that connect with that (or other kind of USB) and do not need an additional power source. If you are going to use midi and your keyboard has a USB option, you can just plug your keyboard into the USB on your computer. You don't necessarily need an interface for midi keyboards that do that. Take a look at your instruments and equipment to make sure the interface has what you need.

Having a MIDI connectivity is somewhat essential to me, since a small MIDI controller or keyboard can allow you to compose and record rough ideas or demos. Most of audio interfaces offer combo XLR/jack inputs (sometimes with HI-Z inputs specifically designed for electric guitars). As for using condenser microphones or DIs, make sure that your interface is equipped with 48V phantom power.

This question is kind of BS. Just buy a great interface for your laptop. Your laptop will power it. If you need more power there are blocks that will power your laptop. I'm pretty sure AI thought of this question. SSL, UAD, & Focusrite make great portable interfaces that won't drain your laptop battery like a firehose.

Nowadays, most of the USB-C interfaces are power through the your laptop via the USB cable. So this is not so much of an issue.

Visit the brand or manufacturer's website of the interface that you are looking into. See if they offer support and software downloads for their products. Sometimes a company will have additional plugins and freebies to go along with their product.

If you are spending less than a $1000 on an interface, save yourself some time and just called B&H or Sweetwater. Level with them, tell them how much you have to spend and what features you want. They will give you educated suggestions so you don't have to figure this out yourself. They are up to date on the latest stuff and get educated first as new products are released. The profit margin is low on these products and the competition is fierce so you don't have to worry about getting milked. Both these companies rely on their solid reputation.

Make a list of the qualities and specifications that you need. Know your instruments and microphones and computer. List the types of input cables and connectivity options you will be using. Some interfaces have inputs that accept both XLR and quarter inch jacks. If you don't need a 5 pin midi DIN connection, opt for the interface model that doesn't have them. That may save you money.

I personally use a UAD Apollo Twin when on the go. They sound great and are small enough to carry in a backpack. Mic pre’s are good. The only downfall in my opinion is the headphone output which fall short compared to my UAD X6 headphone outputs.
