What are the best practices for overcoming challenges with data innovation?

Crap in, crap out is what a leader said in one of my company's tech talks. I truly believe data quality and data integrity are essential and as data scientists or engineers we must always look for ways to automate the validation of data quality in different sources/destinations.

In my experience, the foundation to any reasonable analysis is good data quality. Data quality refers to the accuracy, completeness, reliability, and consistency of data. High-quality data is free from errors, inconsistencies, and discrepancies, ensuring that it can be trusted for decision-making, analysis, and other business processes. Achieving data quality involves measures such as data validation, cleaning, and ensuring conformity to established standards. Inaccurate or incomplete data can lead to flawed analyses and misguided decisions, emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining data quality in various domains, including business, research, and technology.

Work backwards from the business or mission outcomes that you want and make it clear better governance is required to get there.

Foster a collaborative culture among different teams working with data. Break down silos and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. Implement cross-functional training programs to enhance collaboration and understanding of diverse data perspectives. Utilize collaboration platforms and tools to facilitate seamless communication and knowledge sharing.

To promote collaboration, you can create cross-functional teams for data projects, set up data hackathons, and use collaborative platforms like GitHub. Also, consider partnering with universities, research institutions, and other organizations for collaborative data projects.

Our research on collaboration in data science teams has shown that a tool like a data science canvas, which covers both business and technological aspects, is suitable for several functions. It serves as a structuring tool to discuss a project in depth by analysing the current organizational situation and identifying problems in advance. Additionally, it becomes a communication tool that creates trust in the project team's work ensuring a common understanding of the project's goals and challenges. Project progress can also be monitored by using the completed canvas as a checklist. Since data science projects need to be interdisciplinary, such a Canvas can break up silo-mentality by discussing hurdles that are important to the stakeholders.
