A mi el hisopo me ha resultado bastante útil para limpiar el lector, aunque esto no lo recomiendo ya que luego de limpiarlo se han presentado fallas, lo mejor es cambiarla la unidad por una nueva, en si las cosas baratas, no recomiendo repararlas, sino cambiarla por una nueva de ser necesario o algo más moderno.

If you get another drive because you feel you still need one, get a DVD r/w. Doesn't cost any more nowdays but gives you a lot more options for use and potential larger storage space.

Optical drives are a thing of the past in most modern computers. Even some small form factor laptops, have decided to do away with the use of optical and spinning platters. In favor of the now more common solid state drives. Having a reliable external optical drive to use on the go is my recommendations. This will allow any computer with a USB port to access, which most now consider legacy content, Spinning disks. Simultaneously it will assist in troubleshooting current, (if the computer already has one) optical drive issues. When not in use it can be safely stored extending the life of the drive for future possibilities.

If the situation demands that you have a DVD drive, I think the external option is fine. From what I've read, the USB interface speed is enough faster than the DVD write speeds, that it should not create a bottleneck.

If optical drive in computer fails I would check connections on motherboard and see what options those bring since chances are that especially in newer computers there is USB-C connector which would allow wide variety of external devices so I would go for external drive, chances are that it would be also portable to use.

This is the way to go. My department bought ONE external drive. It pretty much only collects dust. But, once in a while it's useful. Very easy to plug into any PC.

If you have the need to run disc files but don't have a physical drive, consider a virtual drive like Virtual CloneDrive. You can mount and run disc images (.bin/.iso) as if they were discs as long as you have them in digital form, not physical. Thus a disc drive is now often used only to create images, and rarely are they used to actually run the disc.

Consider using external optical drives whenever it's needed; with a possibility to be used with multiple computers. Using or Changing internal optical drive can be costly, inefficient and may requires more troubleshooting.

Physical media has the potential to be destroyed accidentally. Improper handling, tilt in the laser causing burnout on the disk, slower read and write times, it is much easier to cause damage through passing of individuals with this type of medium, such as when removing and inserting the media into optical trays. All of these traist make it easier for this technology to break. Then causing the individual or company to have to purchase replacements. (Not including lost time) Where as, transferring it to a more robust medium. That is harder to break, faster to access and use for most people's and devices, such as a flash drive, or online service, is why we now no longer see this type of media being used today.

This is tricky problem since I have been forced to replace optical drives few times, due to their age and limits or those getting broken and getting verification for that. What I would evaluate that is optical drive really necessary as discs are getting small and problematic in keeping and SSD drives offer better performance and features.
