I believe rate per word(RPW) is most appropriate way depending upon the complexity and urgency of project Hourly pay can put both client and freelancer in trouble as everyone's speed of writing may vary. It is best to understand the requirements of the client and then quote price. For example- A client demanding 700 words promotional blog in 1 hour cannot be charged same as a client who wants the same project to be done in 2 days time. - Deadline - Complexity - Information available All these factors contribute to the price that is quoted to a client and it is difficult to be kept flat.

There are a TON of benefits and drawbacks to each and every pricing structure. Hourly pricing allows a freelancer to charge for their time, but they have to be detailed and account for their time to prevent scope creep and micromanaging. A client may feel that the project can be completed in a more timely fashion. Project based pricing is rewarding but requires more research with regards to how many hours have to be dedicated to the project and requires extensive planning. Most free lancers can move to project based after using the hourly model from experience. The project may require additional time to complete but over all is the most effective in my professional opinion.

Project-based pricing is better because the cost of time taken for generating expertise ( say 20-30 years) has to be charged for the consultancy as problem-solving is a technique to be evolved through oversight, hindsight and foresight. It is not an hourly physical work.

Start with a fixed approach and later on when you have more experience you cN incorporate variable if the work demands you to charge more. In case of any urgencies or different software purchased for a specific work.

Definitely a variable price is desirable depending on paying capacity of the buyer and the benefit the buyer gets out of the goods or service.

Reducing contracted price giving valid reason and not as succumbing to bargaining tools may help the consulting company. If there is no expert in the contracting company (generally it is the case) the consultant can enhance price, but he or she should not cheat on quality of products and service.
