Find a company that you admire, study how they do business. Take a salesperson out to lunch from that company and swipe the plan.

Networking and creating connections with other business owners was one of the smartest moves I did when starting out. The wealth of knowledge you can tap in to and also contribute to cannot be understated. Clients are not blind for long, and do not fall for scams easily. It is better to focus on selling customer satisfaction than pushing a lie to make a buck overnight

One way of looking at value proposition is how your business proposes to bring value to the market. Looking at what your customers value and making a meaningful effort to meeting those needs and providing more value to your customers with your business’ products and/or services.

I cannot stress enough the power of networks. Too many small business owners believe they have to do everything themselves. Not the case! A personal opinion is that if the plan breaks even at worst case, has reasonable profitability at a mid point then the calculated risk makes sense. A MUST is liquidity to start. Cash is king. DONT over leverage trying to achieve prosperity!

Keep this information relative to your defined market and what is the most impactful to your success. Business Plans that become immersed into provide national statistics and trends may not directly provide insight to your market. Keep it local and relevant.

Utilize online tools for financial projections if you lack access to sophisticated accounting software. Platforms like LivePlan or Enloop, as well as simple spreadsheet tools, can assist in creating realistic financial forecasts.

Historically when starting out this can be hard to do, as you don't have the resources. Today with AI you can generate images on demand, and there are many free libraries you can source images from (Unsplash etc.).

What are you really planning on using the business plan for? Making a business plan “pretty” if you are just using it for your operational efficiency, may be a waste of time. It’s a living document that can really help you stay on point. Now in my world, if you’re applying for a small business loan to buy a business, you might need a business plan. But, I tell my clients to go to ChatGPT and talk to it for 20 minutes (yes you can have an audible conversation with it) and explain what the deal is, how they intend to run the business, and any other relevant information that they can think of, and then ask AI to generate the business plan for them. It’s a shortcut to just putting together an organized document for your lender.

If you are just starting out then your first plan doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, I will let you in on a secret - all forecasts and plans are wrong. You wont hit them exactly, but the goal is to give you guidance, a direction, and a set of rules and guardrails to make decisions against. So - in order to get started give yourself a timeframe, say 4 hours, and get a a drafted plan out in that time. Make sure you cover off on all the key points, but they don't have to be perfect, just get it all out, so you have something to build on and revise over time.

If your resources are limited the best way to create a business plan is to grab a notebook / doc and spreadsheet and answer these questions: WHO do I want to serve and where can I market to them in bulk? WHAT problem can I solve for them. What financial resources do I need. WHEN am I going back on work (time) or when am I planning to launch. WHERE will I work? Remote or brick and mortar. Where do I want to meet in one, three and five years. WHY am I creating this business (other than to make money). Think impact. HOW am I going to provide my services or make my product? Draft it up. Calculate the projected revenue and expenses. And get started.

Actions speak louder than words. If you have a 50-page plan and zero days of experience, your plan sucks! Business is expensive, there is a lot of trial by fire, and even more failure. A few things to consider. 1) never bet it all on one idea. What you learn in implementation and failure will make you a better business owner and better able to know the right moves next time. 2) If you are not willing to lose you do not want a business you want a job. My favorite line from university is that business has a risk of loss and an opportunity for profit. If you cannot handle a loss, you are not in business. 3) Hire quality talent as soon as possible and pay them too much. Without a workforce, you have only built yourself a job.
