HandsOn Experience on one particular Field. i think gaining practical experience by working with a particular database system such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases like MongoDB or Cassandra. and then work on real-world projects that involve database design, implementation, optimization, and performance tuning.

To be an expert, you have to be the best of the best. Start building the basic skillset from courses, books, then slowly build your experiences thru working career. Read and learn from others. Be open minded and receptive from other colleagues . Focus on a particular database or domain. Many well known experts like Tom Kyte , Steve Feuerstein spend all their lifetime career only focus on one database domain.

1) Complete understanding of schema,database,tables design(data modelling)and data flow how the data movement take place from one service to another. 2) End to End understanding of data flow and use case for each and every service.

READ THE MANUALS, don't just Google! I started in the hard copy days, before PDFs and the internet and, if you wanted the answer to a problem, you had to read the manuals. Teaching/Mentoring doesn't mean setting up a formal class in the conference room with an audience that doesn't have the background knowledge to understand the material. It's the little things. When a Data analyst wants to know how to get certain data, help them with the SQL and explain why it works. When a developer wants to add a column to a table, explain why it may be more appropriate to do it a different way. It's a slow and tedious process to teach from the ground up, but you'll wind up with better people on the project and a better database!

But that deep understanding should always complement with the communication technique that you can explain those things to someone very new to database in a very simple and layman's language. Understanding something technical is one things, but explaining to someone take more deeper knowledge. Book/article/computer/database don't ask question, mentee/students/juniors do asks.

Having a way to personally appraise your technical growth and your skills as a Database Engineer. This will help in revealing areas that would require paying some technical debt. Be aware, different levels of DB engrs. (jnr, mid, senior, staff, principal) have their own level of knowledge requirements. Be sure to truthfully appraise your technical growth vis-a-vis the benchmarks of these skill levels. Also, if possible, acquiring basic knowledge of some programming languages (eg. C++) would aid in reading codes that would aid in troubleshooting certain issues. e.g troubleshooting a crash due to an assertion failure. knowledge of Linux OS and memory architectures would go a long way when troubleshooting/Engineering at the OS layer.

First understand the logic, internals and specific features of the database you are using.adn Always have in mind data space, pointers chains, indexes and performance not only for consulting. If you are capable of design with all these items you will raise up a solid expertise.
