What are the best ways to gain advertising experience?

How does a first-gen immigrant daughter learn about advertising? MadMen. No shame. But I didn't grow up around ad execs or Don Draper daddies, advertising is non-existant in Hispanic households, especially if you're Cuban. While the show doesn't accurately portray the industry, it did spark interest for me. Is this a real career? Can I get paid to bullshit creative? Should I art direct or copywriter? WTF is strategy...accounts? Literally, I had all this questions floating in my head. But in asking the right people, I ultimately chose the copywriting path. I started by selling advertising. Fortunately, I started with an organization that taught the basics. After selling 4 different platforms I moved to the agency side. Along the way I read everything I could on the subject. I am entirely self-taught and feel very knowledgeable in the field.

I started by teaching myself Google Ad Words and getting certified in Google Analytics and Google AdWords. Today, there are several platforms to enhance your skills, such as Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Google Learning. Next, I sought ways to use my newfound skills. I offered digital marketing as a freelancer to get exposure to various projects and gain experience in advertising (Search, SEO, Social Media Marketing). Lastly, I created opportunities to practice my skills on my ecomm sites.

Freelance Projects: Offer your services on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr to build a portfolio. Online Courses: Enroll in digital marketing courses to learn the fundamentals and stay updated on industry trends.

To truly excel as a professional, it's crucial not to confine yourself solely to learning about ads. You must aim to become well-versed in data analytics and CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) too. My experience managing monthly ad budgets of 100k EUR for clients taught me that the real magic lies in the combination of expertise in marketing, ads, analytics, and CRO. This blend is what leads to exceptional outcomes and helps you to earn trust as a seasoned professional.

I interned at an agency that I didn't want to leave. I loved it there. So I made it known that I wanted to stay and was looking for a full-time role. During my internship, I went out of my way to help others and contribute as much as possible. Even for the not-so-sexy assignments. I would go around asking people if they needed help with anything. After a few months, the president of the agency came up to me and said: "So I heard you want to stay...". He asked if I might be interested in assisting one of the Creative Directors. Starting an internship in Telegram is possible at any time, given the desire and persistence. You just need to find a suitable channel owner and ask them directly. You can inquire about internship opportunities or inquire about addresses of specialized chats with such vacancies.

Take advantage of an opportunity to study, work, or intern in another country. They will help with cultural experiences also.

Internships are the best way to get started for ads experience. Maybe few can ask for experience or portfolio but state them your interest towards running ads and showcase your skills to them. If possible do it for FREE to the companies. Its all volume game. You can't just reach out to 10-20 companies and give up. You need to reach out to 100's of companies and business owners to get your first gig. I got the first ads experience through internship. I reached out to lot of people, but fortunately during the process one of my friend referred me to the company and I did it for free in the intial days and charged them later. So volunteer yourself and ask business owners or companies that you can run ads for free for them.

When I was starting out as a copywriter decades ago, I had NO experience at all. I called upon agencies, got interviews with a few people who guided me, and who explained that I needed a spec portfolio (as in, create my own projects). O dia que você for a pessoa mais inteligente na sua sala, você está na sala errada.
