What are the biggest challenges in building a gaming portfolio, and how can you overcome them?

One legal 'hurdle' is that if you worked at/for a different studio, the work that you have made might be owned by that studio (depending on the content of the contract or the applicable law). Therefore it is always good to include in an agreement whether something may be used for your portfolio and how to navigate that in case a game is yet to be released or announced.

Tbh, unless you’re severely lacking in new tools and are getting left behind on the amount of work you can produce, or difficulty getting a job at the studio you want to work. There’s really no need to constantly be on the cutting edge. This could be overwhelming and cause burnout. It’s always good to strengthen your skill set. Double down on what you’re good at! But honestly, most studios don’t really care what you use to produce quality, just as long as you learn their specific tools and adapt to their workflow, you should be just fine on fitting in. Yes, it’s important to know the best new tool, but not every studio is ready to reinvent the wheel for the sake of having the latest “gadget”.

Exploratory art work is great for Instagram and Facebook, but you’re a professional now. Put your best foot forward and please, for the love of god, be able to explain your art pieces, think about what questions would be asked and have some answers. If your answer is always, “because it’s cool”, that will only get you so far. Communication is the most important part of being a professional, if you can’t explain your direction and reason behind your art, it’s time to start paying attention to what you’re doing.

Join a discord, make a channel with friends, and start blasting your wip’s up there. I’m sure you feel your direction is unique and genius at times, but I guarantee you that you’re overlooking something. If you’re the only one critiquing your work, you’re doing a disservice to yourself… plus, it’ll help you receive critical feedback in a professional setting and not get too emotionally attached.

Think of your portfolio as a performance, it’s time to shine. Think about how you want the viewer to feel when seeing your artwork, imagine your telling a story with your project images. If you can get an emotional response, even it’s just a “whoa this is cool” you’ve done the right thing. They now know, that you know, how to present your work. Something that helps during milestones and art critiques on the job. Put a little thought into it instead of just picking the cool ones and going “ok that’s enough”

Think of how you are tailoring your portfolio to companies you are applying to. Does it makes sense to show realistic or stylized projects? Which may have adjacent or complimentary genres or content? I also recommend to show quality vs quantity- all while being able to let the breadth of your skills be shared. Portfolios expand over time, but be mindful and cognizant of which you want to showcase. Seek to understand how to integrate, optimize work to show how it would look in real-time vs something that was farmed or done offline (ie. thinking about draw calls, vertices etc). Being able to show how you built certain pieces can help technical and non-technical reviewers understand your process.

I think my 2 cardinal rules are be concise and good is the enemy of perfect I work by the 60 second rule on portfolios, most people are going to glance at your profile somewhere in the middle of their busy day and give a thumbs up or thumbs down . So it's important it is effective and quickly. People respond to visuals so videos, gifs, and screenshots are a core to my portfolio. I definitely try to include WIP imagery so that I am essentially demonstrating a creative journey through a specific project from beginning to end. Also perfect is the enemy of good, I've seen people not share things less than perfect and it can make it look like you're not and haven't been doing anything at all instead of just holding out for your best work

Be a good person. Don’t be pushy and don’t be rude. You can get what you want if you consider what others need as well. Remember, this is a team sport, not a solo act. Look out for each other and yourself, people think you have to be blunt or bold to get what you want… not always the case. Be diligent and disciplined, your work will speak for itself. Sure, the jerk might get what he wants all the time because no one likes confrontation, but that’s a short term solution. Just think about who you would hire if you owned a business you’d want reliable and confident people. Show it, you’ll get what you deserve I promise.
