Yes - some interesting points. From my experience each "change" needs a clear business reason with benefits that are linked to the organisation's strategy. The benefits could be more revenue, fewer costs, compliance with reg changes, and many others. This reason will then allow a vision to be defined and then in turn success criteria to be defined. Finally each change needs clear and visible management support to ensure it is successful.

One of the most common pitfalls in major change or release management is that the importance of involving IT services is overlooked most of the time. IT services and operations are mostly involved when the change is nearing implementation. This approach leaves the IT service delivery teams completely in the dark about the change and often ends up in firefights until the change is stabilized. The best approach is to involve IT services very early in the project life cycle as an active stakeholder. This will ensure service considerations are also included in the project at the design stage itself. This will ensure a very smooth go-live and safely guard the interests of business and IT teams in unimaginable ways.

Personally, I feel that the most important of implementing change successfully is the human element. Remember people trigger change, people implement change and people then use the change once implemented. There is it important the key people, groups, teams, organisations, suppliers, customers, etc are brought into the change so their needs, demands, worries, etc, etc are understood and managed

Too many change problems are encountered because people and organisations rush into a change without thinking about its reason, its benefits, the people who need to be involved, planning, execution, resourcing, etc, etc.

Per the above, it is important that the key people, firms, suppliers, customers, etc, etc are included in the change process. This will ensure that they are involved in the design, definition, etc. This will ensure (better) buy-in. Also, these people are at the front-line so they will able to help make the change better. Finally, there is a tendency to 'close' a change project once it is live. However, there is a need to have some sort of post-implementation period to ensure that the change is smoothly moved into normal operations.

Mangement / leadership should be looked at through two lenses The first is the more formal structures where change needs to be tracked/steered/challenged via Steering Groups, RAIDs, plans, etc. This will ensure that progress is clear and issues/risks are identified and managed The second (and poss more important) is the softer management support. This is where mgmt will provide visible support, support the teams through problems, be accessible and take ownership of helping.

It is important to understand the dynamics of the organisation(s) where the change is being implemented - Profitability - How much autonomy from the owner ? - How complex is the regulatory environment? - How silo'ed is the firms? - How well is the operating model understood? - How complex is the client base, products and/or services offered? - How clear is the Strategic Direction? - How quickly does the firm react to market movements? - How good is customer focus? - How well does the firm learn from its mistakes?
