What are common misconceptions about creativity in education?

Our education system was designed for the Industrial Age, not the Innovation Age. We won't raise truly creative thinkers until we fundamentally rethink what 'school' looks like.

Everyone has some talents which could be hidden and it gets transformed when the talent is turned into reality. This is " creativity". In other words we need to nurture the students to ensure their hidden talent is transformed into reality.The environment, motivation and guidance play very important role in developing the creativity and innovation. It is necessary to think "Out of Box" to bring into existence something new. This is the ability to go beyond the imagination and develop novelty using knowledge. All discoveries have taken the path of perception,idealization and advancements attributed to an individual’s perception leading to creativity. Creativity exists in all the fields. Creativity lives in everyone. Some people have environments that help creativity flourish more than others. Find a place where your creativity lives naturally, exercise it, then build on it in other places.

A common misconception is that creativity is separate from academic achievement. Some fear that fostering creativity might come at the expense of academic achievement. On the contrary, creativity can complement and enhance traditional learning, leading to better problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of academic concepts.

Personally, I feel creativity is applicable to every single field you can imagine. For example, a good algorithm design is not possible without creative thinking, and without efficient, scalable algorithms, significant progress in any of the STEM fields is not possible. Creativity is all about being smart, unique, and novel. It is like having an in-depth understanding of the underlying domain and, solving the problem by observing or doing something that others can not even imagine.

Common misconceptions about creativity in education often stem from narrow views. One is that creativity is solely for the arts, ignoring its relevance in STEM fields. Another is the belief that creativity is innate and cannot be taught, overlooking its development through education. There's also the misconception that creativity is chaotic; however, it often thrives with structure. Additionally, creativity is sometimes seen as requiring entirely original ideas, when it often involves recombining existing ones. Another misconception is that creativity is a solo endeavor, neglecting the benefits of collaboration. Finally, some think creativity is not crucial for academic success, despite its role in problem-solving and innovation.

As educators, in mathematics we are learning to move from the “banking model” (where there is only one source or way to obtain the correct answer) to one where multiple possibilities to think of answering a problem are acceptable and encouraged. Thus the short answer format on standardized tests to give credence to mathematical thinking and not just a multiple choice answer. The new Common Core Standards for Mathematics K-12 have been out for more than a decade but we still have to address teacher pedagogy to anchor this in foundational work in our craft.

One can not design a formal path or strategy for being creative. For me, in order to be creative: 1) The first step is to understand the task/problem in hand: identify every minute detail of it. The path to creative success is hidden in these minute details, and often ignored. It is all about observing these details/patterns and the end goal. 2) The second step is to acquire the required skill set and also to strongly believe that the seemingly impossible task is doable and that you are the one who can do it! With consistent hard as well as smart work and perseverance anything is achievable. Creativity is becoming rare because either people don't understand the problem or they think it is too difficult without even trying.

I have came across with the similar situation quite a times where i feel my creativity depends on my mood or inspiration which lead to me on inconsistent approach. In order to overcome that approach it requires systematic steps to overcome the following. 1. Be visionary with your thought process. 2. Start being consistent. 3. Act on the work, let it be on paper. 4. Review it. After few cycle of it you'll find out your creative portal has widen up and the flow is smooth and steady.

Creativity is for the gifted. The truth is that all students have the potential to be creative. They should therefore be given the opportunities to express their ideas.

La creatividad puede ser individual y puede surgir de una sola persona, pero sin duda la colaboración, y la interacción con otras personas potencia ayuda a incrementarla hasta límites muy superiores. Me permito citar la frase de Giovanni Corazza que dice " La creatividad ya no es para unos pocos, tiene que ser para todos" indicando incluso que la creatividad debería ser formada y educada desde la escuela y tiene mucho sentido, ya no somos un cúmulo de conocimiento, finalmente ¿para que tanto conocimiento si no se sabe que hacer con él? En esta era en dónde la inteligencia artificial desempeñará muchas tareas que hacemos los humanos, debemos ocuparnos y estimular la creatividad tanto como sea posible potenciando el emprendimiento de ideas innovadoras y propias de la mente humana.

The impact of creative efforts largely depends on the domain in which they are applied. For example, if someone is working in a pure theoretical domain(s), then creativity may not receive immediate recognition, whereas solving practical/industry problems has tremendous impact/value in the real world. In any case, creativity has the potential to extend the boundaries of human knowledge if applied correctly. Personally, I feel creative thinking leads to a sense of pride and joy from finding a solution, and it is testimony that you are destined to do wonderful things. En mi opinión la creatividad siempre tiene un propósito, ya que siempre estamos buscando algo, muchas veces no sabemos qué es, pero eso no quiere decir que no exista, simplemente aún no lo hemos descubierto. Los japoneses lo llaman su ikigai, su propósito, sin el no solo no surgirá la creatividad, también nos dejaremos ir sin remisión. The idea that being creative is not being professional or productive is false. Creativity is innate. I do believe! However, like any talent, it needs to be moulded and trimmed, supported and practiced. Creativity is not only a matter of sharing artistic details; it is also expressed through words and ideas. Creative minds are numerous; they simply require guidance and effort to be stimulated. I strongly feel you should be passionate and extremely focused in order to be creative. Fear and stress are the biggest enemies of creativity. Make sure you surround yourself with positive people and thoughts. Also, try to avoid thinking about irrelevant things/people so that your mind can focus on the underlying problem/task. In general, help others and always try to see and learn some goodness/unique qualities of others. Doing this consistently for a longer period of time will make you not only a creative individual but also a good human being!

As a leader in education, it is important to model the sort of creative experiences you want your teachers to design for students. Are your staff meetings and professional growth activities creative and unusual? Or are they predictable and, dare I say, boring? If you want the teachers of all subjects to wow students with their creativity, then surprise them with creative approaches to staff gatherings.
