Allow me to clarify the concept in layman's terms: think of a feature class as a leaf on a branch of a tree. The feature dataset is the branch itself, and the geodatabase is the entire tree. Essentially, a feature class represents a specific type of spatial data, such as points, lines, or polygons, while a feature dataset contains multiple feature classes.

Feature class is just a shapefile inside a Geodatabase and nothing else. Its like the Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible and Young Military cadet David Shawn in Taps Movie. So the Tom is Tom like Shapefile is shapefile. Feature data set is a box inside a geodatabase (Truck Container) that has multiple feature classes inside. Feature class is an othername of shapfile but now within Geodatabase where it can be cross related with other shapefiles ( eg in topology) Feature data set has its own coordinate system like UTM 43 WGS 84. So all Feature classes or Shapefiles will be on same coordinate if they are within 1 feature Dataset.

Still not a perfect analogy, but I find this useful specially when explaining to people.

You then run through a variety of Options for a feature class, selecting name, fields, whether it is a point line or polygon, and coordinate system. A feature dataset can be edited with rules by either using the specific feature data set or changing some of the rules within the Geodatabase itself and integrating these into the feature dataset.

Let's be clear that these aren't really generic GIS terms, but proprietary terms created by Esri for their software. A "feature class" is really just another name for a "spatial table" in a relational database. The only thing that makes it "special" is the geometry or geography column (assuming we're talking vector data). Ultimately it's a table in a database, and insisting on calling it a "feature class" might introduce a barrier for you when you are integrating with IT personnel or even your customers. In my experience, the concept of a "feature dataset" has only a few use cases that really pay off: topology, for example. Other things that are enabled by a feature dataset, like relationships, can also just be done with database tools.

Without good file management and naming conventions, finding and understanding files becomes increasingly difficult.
