The massive expansion of AI over the last 3-5 years is a result of the advancements in generative AI modules. These modules produce responses based on prompts. The operating principle is simply the "What you give is what you get" module. Updating our skill set, regardless of our field in higher education, will require us to be more creative and critical thinkers, especially when using AI. Despite projections of AI replacing humans in a utopian AI future, our ability to think critically and creatively is what will give us the superior edge we need. The first time I used AI, specifically ChatGPT 3.5, I was shocked at the responses I received to my prompts. They were good responses, but I noticed that if I depend on the AI, my ability to be different and human, thus my ability to think will be greatly impaired.. My response to this situation was simple: I will do the most important part that a student or higher education expert does: think. I will let the AI help me catch my lapses.. I believe the conversation about the best practices and ethics of AI use should prioritize holding users, both students and staff, accountable for the originality and integrity of their thought work, while also embracing the inevitable changes brought about by AI.

While AI is powerful, let's not forget the human element of education. We must not lose sight of the value of human interaction in teaching, mentorship and interaction/communication. I highly believe there will be a growing need for professionals to adapt by cultivating skills that AI cannot replicate, such as empathy and ethical judgment.

AI is already influencing HE. At this point in time HE Professionals are concerned about how our students use AI to undertake assessments. However, a more pressing concern is how AI can replace us as HE Professionals. No doubt movies project the concept of AI in the future as the digital teacher. However, some aspect of this dystopian future already exist in current AI platforms. As HE Professionals, we must advocate for the human element in our practice. We must now find a way to work with AI rather than oppose it as an effective teaching tool. To work with AI we must first understand its full capabilities and applicability to our specific focus area. Perhaps one day we may have a research paper where AI is a co-author. Food for thought!
