I personally when I was younger, volunteered at a independent mechanic workshop. I started by sweeping the floor, making drinks for the other technicians, but the key is I was able to observe what they were doing and gave me an opportunity to ask questions. I was then able to work on vehicles under direct supervision, carrying out an oil change or replacing an air filter. To gain a more hands on approach. As a result, I gained friends, a letter of recommendation from a reputable source, which helped me land a paid role further down the line.
