What do you do if you want to expand your understanding of leadership styles and approaches?

In my experience I believe a blend of reading extensively and engaging mentors is a recipe for a win. But most of all, their is no substitute for persistence in any field. By reading books you learn to pick up trends in your industry which helps you better align your activities and engaging mentors allows you to enjoy knowledge that they have acquired over many years thus leveraging their experience. One of the most important thing you can do to help yourself get a head is constantly learning, emmerse yourself in your industry and strive to become an expert on a few difficult avenues of your industry of choice, that will give you an added advantage.

What has been a game changer for me and why I do what I do today is taking the time to understand each other’s strengths. We all have different strengths and how we see the “best” way to approach work. Most of us flock to work with people who are just like us when we end up missing out on leveraging someone else’s strength that can bring a better way of doing things. I loved what it taught me so much that I learned ended up going to get certified with Gallup so I could do this work with my own leadership teams and here I am today. I’m addicted and am so much more energized and productive because of it!! 😊

Agree 100% - Leaders are readers. This is an intentional use of time to stay current and relevant, while intellectually exploring new or contrasting ideas. This continual focus on personal growth and self-development allows your beliefs to grow, expand and evolve, versus “thinking you have it all figured out”. Every time we read with the intention to understand and explore we’re making an investment in our growth. Also good to note that if you want to internalize concepts do more than read books - study them. I find taking the time while reading to make notes (iPhone Notes) on key concepts greatly improves my retention and makes these notes accessible any time for sharing or review.

One thing I’ve found helpful is making a calendar too meet regularly with mentors and prepare questions ahead of the meeting to be more effective. Mentors are great to help you navigate the challenges in the corporate world. Use them wisely.

the plural 'mentors' is the most important thing to note here. Don't just look at the people you most admire - or get 5 of the exact same kind of person because all you are doing is confirming your own bias. You need to see how different leaders operate with different people to get a really thorough understanding of what works for you and for them. One style doesn't work for every person. You need to be able to change it up when people require different things. Expand don't limit.

At least once in a one month, I used to meet my senior people or engage with their recent videos or podcast. Mentors provide valuable insights based on their experience, helping you navigate real-life situations. Their different viewpoints tells different leadership models, helping you develop a more comprehensive approach. Look for mentors whose styles you connect with, build a relationship based on trust and respect. Take advantage of the chance to learn from their successes and obstacles, applying their knowledge to your own leadership journey. With mentors guiding you, you set out on growth, expanding your leadership in meaningful ways.

I have often found it useful to reflect frequently at my own style and understand the impact and the outcomes it has had. During my reflection I also make note of observing others and how they have navigated similar situations which I can incorporate to have the desired outcomes. This has helped me improve and adapt continuously.

Take time to watch and listen to others and how they influence and lead. Then reflect on your own style, the impact you have and the outcomes (how engaged are your team, how did your stakeholders react, how clear is your vision). What can you learn from others, what is a natural progression from your leadership style, what can you dial up or down to have a greater impact and to be a more effective leader?

In my leadership journey, I've found that reflection is a powerful tool for growth and self-awareness. As a neuroscientist, I'm fascinated by the brain's ability to rewire itself through experience and reflection. To make reflection a consistent practice, I: ✍️ Keep a journal (key decisions, challenges, lessons learned). Revisiting it helps me identify patterns and areas for improvement. 🧘♂️ Set aside dedicated time for reflection, whether it's a daily meditation practice or a weekly review of my goals and progress. 💡 Seek feedback from my team and peers, using their insights as a mirror to reflect on my leadership effectiveness. In the fast-paced world of leadership, slowing down to reflect is not a luxury, but a necessity.

While reflecting on your own individual experiences, observe leaders around you to understand which attributes you like about them that you'd like to embrace, and those that don't resonate with you. No one is perfect and leadership is an ongoing learning journey. Some leadership traits that work well for most in their leaders are transparency and integrity - in good and 'not so good' times.

As mentioned, you can get more insights into the nuances of leadership only through commitment and compassionate practices helping and enabling the others achieve their life's missions. Not everything would go right as per your plans, however meticulously crafted. You need to "reflect and introspect" on your past experiences to recall what went wrong and what went right. It's a good idea to keep a diligent record of details of every leadership opportunity and how and what you learnt through each of them.

Join online forums or local leadership groups. This allows you to connect with and learn from other aspiring leaders. Share experiences, debate approaches, and gain valuable insights from a diverse pool of perspectives. Can also listen to podcasts of famous leaders and gurus

Workshops and seminars offer hands-on learning opportunities for diverse leadership approaches. Through interactive experiences, participants explore new concepts and strategies, honing their skills in a supportive atmosphere. Peer and facilitator feedback fosters growth, enhancing understanding of leadership theories' practical applications. These events serve as invaluable platforms for refining leadership skills, preparing individuals to navigate real-world challenges with confidence and competence.

Attending workshops doesn't have to be the run of the mill standard workshops within your organisation. There are tons of presentations, events, panel discussions out there - in person ideally, but also on-line. There is a real breadth of experience available, not just the 'mandatory' HR led leadership stuff your organisation makes you do. It's worth seeing what local networking groups offer as there are always different presenters and facilitators who will be giving examples of leadership styles and experience.

Workshops can be excellent of course; but in order to gain real knowledge of your own leadership style; develop potentially better skills and ultimately a peak performing team, working in a group alongside peers is important. Having open and honest discussions, learning from each other and providing peer to peer coaching can be beneficial to all.

Building Relationships, Not Just Collecting Contacts: Focus on Quality Over Quantity: Actively networking is about building meaningful connections with people you share interests or goals with. Aim for quality conversations rather than collecting a large number of superficial connections. Initiate Conversations: Don't wait to be approached. Take the initiative to introduce yourself, ask questions, and find common ground. Be a Giver, Not Just a Taker: Actively networking is about offering value to others. Share your expertise, connect them with helpful resources, or offer genuine support.

Dealing with humans is the most complex assignment, as everyone is uniquely Created and evolved. For wider and in-depth experience, you need to enlarge your leadership network. Through participation in workshops, seminars, conferences you can associate with your peers. You can join professional organizations and be active in the affairs so you can interact with seniors in the leadership domains and benefit from associating with them.

Networking can be very beneficial. Networking provides opportunities to learn from others but can also assist in opening new doors for your career. Try to think outside the box and network with leaders from different industries. Leadership and leadership skills are universal but gaining a better understanding and perspectives from different industries opens the door to new ideas and ways you may lead.

Diversity in leadership involves listening to everyone, regardless of how they present their ideas/solutions to you and the team. By integrating all voices and emphasizing the strengths of each, we build respect and ensure that everyone is heard. As a leader, my first step is to avoid assuming that my approach and leadership style are superior. Instead, I allow myself to learn from all the perspectives within my team (I permit myself to be the worst and learn from all the voices in my team). Acredito que estar aberto a novos olhares, novas perspectivas, enriquecem e fortalecem nossa liderança. Para isto o respeito precisa ser uma base sedimentada. Podemos aprender e crescer muito quando nos permitimos não ter certezas que paralisam. Abraçar a diversidade é a deliciosa expêriencia de descobrir que podemos ser diferente, pensar diferente, fazer diferente em uma mesma base de valores éticos e morais. Good thoughts here - to add a little more thought, seek out those who clearly think differently than you, this transcends all other categories. “As a man thinks, so is he”. In order to successfully do this, you really have to work at laying your own thoughts and conclusions down before you seek their input. Otherwise, your own lense of thought, will cloud the input.

As a Leader, you come across people of varying backgrounds, cultural values and personal beliefs. You need to embrace diversity of this highly heterogeneous groups. You need to choose an appropriate leadership style for maximizing the impact of your leadership efforts. What truly matters is how many your followers are enamored to emulate your leadership style to contribute to the betterment of our Society.

Talk to people and actually listen to what they have to say. Talk to people who are different from you and actually listen to what they have say. Ask them purposeful questions, humbly and kindly. Actually listen to their response. Learn how to practice empathy, and you’ll learn how to approach leadership effectively.

Understanding leadership styles and approaches helps in my own leadership development. But most successful leaders don’t always rely on their dominant style in leading. They are able to effectively adapt their style and approach to the situation and context, inspiring their audience to action. That makes communication a key ingredient of leadership. Effective communication helps leaders to be successful in what Franklin Covey states as the four essential roles of leadership namely, to inspire trust, create a vision and strategy, execute the strategy and coach their team by providing positive feedback to reinforce performance and help them to reach their own potential. I am also keen to learning from successful female and diverse leaders.

Beyond the aforementioned aspects, I can tell from my own experience, that coaching on the job has invaluable potential for personal growth and the expansion of one‘s skill set. Through continuously mirroring situations, refocusing the coachee‘s attention to their own feelings, core beliefs, motifs of action, and behaviours as well as regular feedback, they can expand their comfort zone. Prerequisites: psychological safety and non violent communication.
