The issue is that Carbon Fiber is prohibitively expensive from an "economies of scale" standpoint. It's not enough to discover lighter materials. If it's too expensive, then it's pointless. OEMs are already supremely thirsty for cost-downs and are doing everything they can to make each dollar work as much as possible in their favor. Therefore, although R&D is important to create beneficial materials, it's equally important to scale their production in a way that is both cost-efficient and produces high quality batches.
