Another factor to consider is understanding the costs associated with storage, I/O and CPU as these play an important role in identifying optimization opportunities. Another important factor is to understand the use cases and build accurate queries accordingly.

To get really good at making your database run faster, start by figuring out what's slowing it down. For instance, if you notice a particular search taking forever, you might tweak how the database organizes its information to speed things up. Keep testing and adjusting until everything runs smoothly, and keep an eye out for new tricks to keep improving.

Many of my optimization projects are based on understanding the architecture of the database. The default configurations during installation often do not perform well in environments with large data sets or high transaction volumes. For example, in databases with continuous data changes (frequent Update, Delete, Insert commands), it's necessary to increase the configuration for the storage capacity of the files that log these changes.
