What do you do if you want to start your own Building Design business?

The niche is not easy to define at the beginning, according to my experience the first thing you should keep in mind if you want to start your own business is to define WHAT IT IS THAT YOU LIKE TO DO SO MUCH. We all start out as residents of some construction site and if you ask me that is the basis for everything else, there you learn discipline, to follow a schedule, to deal with suppliers, contractors, etc. Try to learn as much as you can at this stage and then you have an idea of how to organize yourself and get started. I would say that with patience, time and practice you can become an expert. That is the beautiful thing about Architecture that it allows you to experiment and create your own path.

1. Find your niche: What are you good at in 'Building Design'? Check within, what made you take up this? 2. Marketing: 'Word of mouth' may help you start. Use that experience in Social media. Your existence needs to be seen, heard & known. 3. Be Consistent: Don't give up in challenging times. Quality will come with practice. 4. Be honest: Keep your integrity. It'll help you gain trust in the market for a very long time. It'll get you repeat customers too. 5. Learn to learn: Never assume that you know everything. Be open to learning. Be active in learning new things. Read a lot. 6. Have a Team: Delegate daily businees chores to your team & focus on moving from 'Struggle' to 'Stablilize' to 'Scale' your business, over the years.

According to my experience ,you must be dedicated in the field for certain numbers of years to understand everything about the bussiness. Establish a dedicated workspace for your building design business, equipped with the necessary tools, software, and technology to support your work. Invest in design software, drafting tools, computers, and other equipment needed to create high-quality designs.

Showcase a Strong Portfolio: Showcase your skills and previous projects to potential clients. Most Importantly We need to update and upgraded with New Technologies. 3. Es importante saber a que tipo de clientes quieres dirigir tu negocio. Que obras son las que te interesan para tu estudio e incluso aprender a decir que no si un proyecto no se adapta a lo que realmente estás buscando.

Your portfolio is very important to make yourself known and to show your future clients what it is that you know how to do so well and why they should hire you. Nowadays the portfolio is no longer a .PDF full of images and letters, if you ask me the more didactic, different and authentic it is, the better. Try publishing on different digital platforms such as Behance, Instagram or even WIX if you want to have a first website.

Here are 3 strategies new firm owners can use to create a portfolio of work when they’ve only just started their own business: 1. Side hustle approach: use your after hours and on weekends to take on design projects while perhaps still at another firm. That way when you officially start on your own you have a body of work to show. 2. Speculative work: this is conceptual work where perhaps you find a vacant plot / building and conceptualise a scheme for it based on a conceptual client. 3. Competitions: competitions are a great way for you to get a lot of recognition and exposure really quickly and early on. Competitions also pull out the best of you from a design perspective, making it a great section to feature in your portfolio.

One thing I have learnt so far in Nigeria about starting your own business especially in the construction 🚧🏗️ world is; you'd need a very strong connection with good skills to match! Once you have these two, build others, don't be self centered.

Before you set up your business, it is imperative that you have a project in hand. Setting up an architectural business could be an expensive enterprise and you need some cash in hand in order to do so.

You already have the experience, a more or less defined niche and your portfolio, now you can create your company. Start with a name that expresses (for example) your way of being, what you want your clients to know and feel that you care about when they read it, or (why not?) if you are independent and work on your own, use your Own name. That's what I did once I defined my business model and the way I was going to work from that moment on.

Well, here I consider that it depends on your business model and how you would like to live through Architecture, how you imagine and dream of it. If you are dedicated only to Architecture (or want to be) and want to have many projects at the same time, a large office, hire many employees, etc. Or if, on the other hand, you prefer to outsource most of the things, have a small office (even at home) and have a monthly/bimonthly project for example. Without a doubt, digital channels are the best today, beyond voice to voice, if you manage a blog for example or have an Instagram account, there you can talk about yourself, your projects and all the services you provide as you are (also) creating a community.

1- Start your website and market yourself and your work. 2- If you are a minority, like a woman, you can start a minority business in architecture. 3- Register with the City or county to get design bids. 4- My advice is not to start a business before you have a project in hand as setting up is costly. 5- You may team with other architects who need some help with their work load at the beginning. 6- You need to develop a niche and a style. Be authentic, be patient, persist and learn how to run a business.

Need only work one one thing summed up in one word: "Relationships". Everything else can be bought or outsourced, from engineers to drafters and anything in between.

1)You need to know your strength and how you can use your strength to add scope value to your clients. 2) Commit what you can deliver and deliver what you promise. Have a process of delivery to ensure this

Management is everything, an organized project allows you to work without stress, having a work schedule that you constantly feed and update, maintaining good and clear communication with your clients, contractors, and suppliers is key. These last two are built over time, it is not easy to have good allies, be calm and always work with honesty, transparency and order. Useful tools from Excel to Project, my advice is to always be organized, I know it sounds overwhelming and not everyone likes it or doesn't give it that much importance but believe me it will save you a lot of headaches later.

If I were to start my own business I would: 1. Consider on gaining experience (either by working for somebody or getting in touch with a mentor). This would give me an overview of what's happening in the market. 2. I would definitely invest most of my resources on building my personal brand by creating content around my professional journey (incl. obstacles and wins), my expertise and areas of interest. 3. And as I built my voice online, I would accept every work opportunity that came my way. Since it's not really easy to define your niche when you start. Experimenting and understanding your work vibe is key, in the early stages of a business.
