If you are over 40, I'd say just forget it and do something else. The software industry is dead set against older people. Facebook employs dozens of lawyers who have the sole job of figuring out how to hire only young people without running into trouble with the government for doing so. I'm sure other companies feel the same. I switched careers and became a woodworker because of the anti-gray nature of the software business. I couldn't be happier.
